Technical Part number interchangeable

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Tony Rice Jr., Jul 11, 2016.

  1. Does anyone know if cylinder head for a Pontiac Torpedo straight 6 part number 505213 is interchangeable with GM part number 512118? My car year is 1948 if that helps.

I'd be on it, but my Hollander only goes back to 61 or 2. Somebody will chime in I'm sure. I wouldn't be too confident it will interchange though.

Are they both for a Pontiac six? Do you have both heads to examine? Heads often interchange over the years. The different part numbers may reflect different compression or some minor modification like heater hose location.

  4. You might start by seeing if they take the same head gasket.

  5. It is one cylinder head and I don't have one on the car right now. I will look to see if it takes the same gasket.

'49-'54 same head gasket - mount bosses & bolt holes are going to be different on a '49 up head, but you'll have to compare.

Looked up your numbers in my Hollanders. There's a listing for a head with the casting number "512119", but no "512118". If the part number is 512118, than the casting number 512119 is probably the correct head as casting numbers usually differed by a digit or two from the p/n.

In any event, Hollander's says 512119 cast number head will fit Pontiac 1941-1954 6-cyl.
