I want to paint a set of aluminum valve covers. While I have sanded the covers smooth there are a few casting defects that are too deep. What would be the best filler for these small imperfections? And what would be the best primer to use?

If you are serious about keeping paint on aluminum, you need to first use veri-prime. This is a dupont product that was designed for this. It is a self-etching primer that will grab onto the surface. Then use a good primer surfacer over that.

  3. JB Weld works as a decent filler for small imperfections, but you need to get any oil/grease off. I also like to have a sandblasted surface for better adhesion.
