Here's what my dad and I have been working on when we're not making wheels. 28-29 A Roadster. We traded a guy for the running chassis for a set of wheels and paid $750 For a nice cowl, and some pretty rough doors and quarter panels. We had some other things laying around and just pieced everything together. And Lots of patch panels, if they made one we probably got it, plus some other ones we made ourselves. We're not really going for any particular "look" but I think it kinda ended up as an early gow job style. It's not quite done but getting pretty close. We got the windshield on today. We've only got about $2500 in it so far. What do you think? Jimmy
Great look. Horse trading and hard work pay off again. Your gonna have a lot of fun in that hot rod chuck
Where did you get those wheels?LOL Very cool ride, proves that you don't need to spend huge $$ to have a great car!
I thought I'd do an update on this, We got it running and we've just been driving it around the ranch a lot for now. Tons of fun! We put a Mallory distributor and it works great. Having the stock engine is fun, that air-fuel mixture knob makes it really easy to start and warm up. We're working on getting a title and license for it now and we need to do something about the seats, right now we've just got some thick pieces of foam. We're thinking of covering them with some burlap sacks.
Great looking car! I think you'll find the headlamps will be shaking a bunch since they aren't braced at all on those headlamp bar ends bolted to the frame horn. Just give it a look. I noticed you still have mechanical brakes which is fine IF they are correctly rebuilt, have good drums and linings(woven Scandanvia if original pressed steel drums, modern linings if reproduction cast iron drums), and are carfeully adjusted and kept that way. New reproduction seat spring backrest and bottom cushions are available from Car-line Mfg. in Beaumont TX or Snyder's in New Springfield OH for not too much money. Believe me, foam is not the way to go. The money spent on springs will repay your butt and spinal column a thousand fold in the first year you drive the car! Love the old strip-down gow job look. Can't wait to see it with paint.
The next step is to get some better brakes on it, but for now they're working pretty good. We went through the whole system and have them working perfectly. It will look up all four wheels on our dirt road, which is the only place we're driving it now. Plus it has the stock engine in it and I'm not exactly going fast. We had thought about the headligh bar thing and decided to see how bad it really is before we do anything. I've driven it around a bit at night and it didn't seem that bad to me. As for the seats, I'm sure you're right but we had an old foam mattress laying around and decided to just go for it. As for the paint thing...I'd like to, but this body is really really rough, and it would be A LOT of work to make it good enough for paint. So we're thinkin we're just gunna leave it like that and let the patch panel rust catch up wih the rest of the car. The rears are some 7.50-16 Firestones a friend traded us for some wheel. I think coker make them new still. We've got an extra pair if you need some. The fronts are some 6.00-16s we just had laying around. The treads don't even match. I want to get some 5.60-16s or maybe something even smaller. We're putting some 16" jumbo wheels on the front and some 15" Jumbos on the back pretty soon. Jimmy
