The photo shows a GM 12 Bolt Rear End on an OT 70 Chevelle

I need some help identifying the purpose of what looks like 2 adjustable allen head studs with retainer nuts that are on the center of the rear end cover

Does anyone know the purpose of these?

    Any help is appreciated.

They snub up against the axle caps for more support.

Yep, basically the cover is acting as a girdle to give support to the bearing caps. You install the cover with those bolts backed out, tighten the cover down, then snug those two bolts up against the caps, and use the lock nuts to hold them in place.
