I'm getting ready to coat the frame for my 63 Catalina. It's bare. now it's got surface rust, should I blast it or wire wheel it and paint it, or scrape it clean of the loose crap and POR 15 it? Just getting some opinions is all. Thanks in advance.

Sandblasting, epoxy primer like DP40 then paint is the best way. Wire brush helps but really doesn't do well on rust. I've done the scrape and POR15 thing as well, they (por15) say it work wonders, sold the car so I can't tell you how true it is.

Did you brush the POR 15 on?

No, I sprayed it. I have brushed it on smaller stuff, really comes out looking pretty good, brush marks level out well as it dries.
Did find out it's not bullit proof, brake fluid takes it right off.

Blasting it now is far better than wishing you had some time down the road. Bob

Well I guess I'll just sandblast it and paint it.

POR 15 can be brushed on; Best when put on blasted metal, because it needs to have some "bite". It 's pretty tough stuff,....and will need a "top coat" because of being UV sensitive.

On my current builds, I've used POR-15 silver and then their Chassis Coat on top. Usually over a blasted frame. Unless it has to be a certain color, to match the car, then I use Master Series or POR-15 as the primer (pretty much the same chemistry) , then regular basecoat color, and Master Series clear.
But Single Stage uro or BC/CC over epoxy, will work as well, over blasted steel.

  9. These are well known for being prone to rot, so I wouldn't spare the expense on protecting it.

Yeah, that's why I asked which is better. The frame on the car now is shot. I had to find another boxed frame for it and I want it to last.

After you blast it and primmer it, spray it with industrial Imron. Bullet proof, and is cheaper than most paint on the market. It will have a little orange peel but not noticeable on the frame.
