Ive wanted to buy a first gen El Camino for a long time and will be close to a deal on a 1960 in the next few days have also seen a 59 for around the same price, which model do people like best ive always thought the 1959 was the coolest, but sought of changed my mind recently to a 1960 the design seems more refined and probably not as outrageous as the 1959.
Had the same problem deciding between a 66 Nova and 67, I went for the 66 at the end.

I've always preferred the 60. You don't see as many as you do 59s but I've never really been a fan of any 59 Chevy.

Look closely for frame rust and floor boards, on both years.

Some pix of the differences. Notice the shape of the tailfins was toned down in '60. But the '59 didn't have the keen jet planes on the quarters.

I wouldn't kick either one out of the garage. I prefer the 60.

My grandparents had a '60 Bel Air when I was a kid and I always liked the tail lights better. What colors are they? Got any pics?

they are basically the same animal with different body pieces it is just a matter of preference, but since you my preference would be the 59 , with that said which one is in the best shape Tom

  11. I love them both but the '59 has the cool factor. Those big outlandish fins!

  12. I think for envy factor, the '59 is the first choice.

Which ever one I get rust is a problem I think I will end up with the 1960 its from California biggest downfall of the first gen El caminos is rust Ive got some photos of the underside looks good, quarter panels are bubbling I doubt there is an original 1st gen wearing its original quarter panels. I know the 1960 is a lot rarer but probably the 59 a lot more popular. I will post pictures soon, both cars I was looking at were between 10000 to 12000USD so not a heap of money.

I like a 59 as a custom and a 60 more as a hot rod. I would probably buy the better condition / better deal, but I think ultimately the 59 is more popular if you are concerned about resale.

the reason you see more 59's is because Chevrolet stopped 1960 ElCamino production mid year. only about 3000 were built.

You cant loose. The 59 is more iconic, the 60 is a lot less common. The 60 is a bit more sedate in the styling, the 59 has those craaazy fins and tail lights.

  25. I agree with the Squirrel here. I like them both well enough and if there were two for the same price I would probably buy the one that is more solid but I still prefer the look of the '59 best.

Fail to see how you can go wrong. Go with the best one.

my uncle also had a 60 Belair that he bought brand new and like you said I like tail light treatment and the look of the front. The 59s are too "busy"

I would do 59 if either were available but Elcos aren't easy to find in nice shape so whatever you prefer

  30. It is just my opinion but I would go with he '59. This is a lot like the question, "Which TBird is best, '56 or '57?". I don't think there is a "correct" answer to either question.
