I picked up an open drive from a friend he says it come out of a 46 pickup with a v8 how strong are they would it hold up to a 283 with a 2 speed tranny ? In my opinion it is a real nice piece I hate to ruin it but I am sure guys put more power than that to them am I right?

Will hold up just fine. Biggest prob is the ratio most likely is 4.11 or if your lucky 3.78. Either way a trans with OD would work good.

I can't imagine hurting it behind a Power Glide. There's little possibility of shock loading and the torque output of a 283 isn't going to hurt it. Think about it for a minute: What do you think all the early ('50s) drag cars had in them? Guys started putting Chevies in their old Fords almost from the git-go. It was the transmissions that broke-not the rearends.
