now , the engine as only 50 miles since first cranking ,
runs good on the road , has good power , but..
    i have bad iddle ,
i have to tighten the iddle screw to 1200 /1300 rpm , if not , the negine dies...
    i can see the timing at 10° at 1200 rpm , i think it's ok ...
    any idea ?
perhaps vaccum leak even all is new....
    any help appreciated ...

Did you adjust the low speed mixture screws? A vacuum gauge would be handy also.:)

Initial set idle mix screws 1-1/2 turns, idle speed just enough to open throttle blades a crack, set timing to 8 degrees with vacuum disconnected and plugged, reconnect vacuum and set idle speed to 450 rpm with transmission in drive and brake on.

That should get you started, fine tune from there.

This assumes clean fuel, and all components in good working order

    ok Paul ,
saturday morning ( saturday evening for you )i'll try with 1-1/2 turns on the mix screws ,
re- adjust timing to 8 degrees vacuum disconnected and plugged,
reconnect vacuum , and see if the engine runs good to 450 rpm...
i read somewhere the vacuum gauge is supposed to be to 18/22 to 450 rpm..
    is it right ?

    That's about right for vacuum.

I would actually kick the timing up a bit from where you have it. Don't forget, that's a performance Isky cam. Also retighten all vac. lines, carb, and intake manifold. Spray some starter fluid at vac. connections and carb base and check for possible vac. leak. With that cam, you're not going to have a super low idle.

    Hello Paul,
i'm glad to hear you again....
about Isky cam , that's why i set timing to 10 degrees , not to 8 as original setting.
just say , i set first at 8 degrees , fired the engine , and turn the distributor a bit as the engine turns better,
then take the timing light and read it was 10 degrees when the engine is better.
i know i am not going to have a super low idle , but 1200 rpm is really high....

If I remember correctly the stock timing was 4-1/2 degrees..
But yes, you need to start somewhere and fine tune from there.

    Hello guys..
    i found the culpit ....
    very difficult to diagnos ...
it's the gasket on the plate who was bad , 2 holes were at a bad location ,
    reseal the small holes...
i had to cut the gasket a bit..
now , engine is 950 rpm on neutral , and 650 rpm on drive..
    idle is steady....

    Good for detective!:D

  15. So we're looking at uncovering a vacuum port between the throttle plate and the float bowl. Can anybody explain the purpose of these ports? Bowl venting? Power valve? Hot idle compensator? o_O
