Does anyone know where in Illinois this place is? I'm always down for a roadtrip.

I'm from Pekin,Ill and moving back. Seems like this yard is top secret since others have also asked where it is.
Sadly I remember lots of Illinois junk yards similar to this all over the state. Most are long gone now. Even above E Peoria where the gambling boat and hotels are now were several yards actually over flowing into the Illinois river. Things like that caused many to be closed. I still think there is one south of Pekin just under the rt 29 RR overpass past the prison.
The yard I liked best was along the Mississippi River south of Quincy. When we were kids we expected old junk yards to be around forever.

Good observation, neighbor. I could not drive to the yard now, after a 2 or 3 decade absence, but my recollection is that it is south of Secor Illinois, near the Mackinaw River.

It's been a few years but I've been there. Looks like he's moved out a few cars. That custom shoebox with the louvered hood sure would have been cool in its day. Gus is an interesting guy. Big into bikes and scooters too.

These threads always make me sad-and smile. The original pictures were taken 8 years ago. Not much left then, plus a couple of crushing crazes since then. Not much likely left, but folks are drooling. In fact, the OP hasn't posted for 8 months. We can yearn for the days when junkyards everywhere were full of old cars and military stuff, but we live in a much different time. Better start work on that flux capacitor.

Does anyone know if Ace Auto Salvage in Tonica, Il is still around? I used to see ads for that place in Deals on Wheels back in the day. I think it was at an old airport.

Those tail lights are from a 1955-56 dodge royal lancer/coronet. They are a pita to find good ones. On flea bay when they come up a nice pair will go for 300. I am still looking for some nice lens if any body has any.

It's been a long time since I had been to this yard and I heard he has sold some cars out of it since the pictures were taken (seen ads in the auto trader papers too). I recently saw a flyer advertising an auction on October 8th to sell off what is in the yard, I have recently moved to TX but I might need to drive back to IL to see what is left and what sells.

he still advertises ocassionally in on craigslist , the spot I went to was in down town Tonica , plus he had a place right off the interstate that was part of a farm /truckstop as you came into town .. hes slowly dwindling down . the place in Pekin south of the prison is gone they cleaned it out several years back EPA forced them out . IL EPA and people moving out to the country from the city are making these places dissapear , I know of 3 so far in the last several years that have been closed and cleaned .

Looks like the same situation as a lot of guys. As a friend said once, "My love of old cars caused me to destroy a lot of them."

I'm betting most of those did not come out of that yard in one piece, most of them are underground up past the rockers. I can't think of anyplace in IL where there would be much metal left on anything under the ground level.
Sam, where was that yard at, and when was the auction there held? Gene

  28. sale was in 2016,...near Danvers, Illinois

Is the ground there that soft, or is that leaves and foliage washed up around them? I know all the snow softens the soil up, but never figured it would be that much.

Nope that’s mud all the way. Most of those cars were sold to the scrappers, very few went to private buyers. Only the really ambitious or insane bought anything out of there. It’s a shame a lot of good cars went to waste over the years sitting and rotting.
