I grew up in Ames, never saw that car. Any details?? I do remember a channeled coupe with a sbc and multiple carbs that sat at a service station on the corner of Grand and 13th St. Owner's name was Dean Hagen? Anybody have pics or details of that car?
I'm sitting in Ames right now. Almost looks like it was taken by the old horse barns/I-Tech building on the North side of the Campus. The plate on the car is county 85 which is Story County (Ames) and it says Ames Trib in the lower corner of the pic. Give us more details if you can.
The pic came from another site that many of the HAMB'ers don't like because of the rodent population. They were origianlly from ames historical society. I think maybe the car was a project from the high school's auto shop program. I'll see if I can find any more details. There are also some COOL drag pic's. The drag strip was only paved for the first 60 feet!
Details on the photo: EDUCATION -- Greg Gammack (right) and Keith Munson check the r.p.m. on Gammack's 1923 Model T Roadster with a 1956 Chevrolet V-8 engine. The car is on the lawn on the west side of Central Junior High School where the boys are enrolled in the school's auto mechanics class taught by Leonard Bengtson. Here's a link to the rest of the Ames Drag Strip pic's: http://www.ameshistoricalsociety.org/exhibits/tribune/08/wf_0825.htm
One thing has not changed at all, the appropriate tire combination for local conditions! Tall up front and aggressive lugs out back. Even today there's a subculture of modified-for-dirt street cars. Cool T!
great picture, looks in great shape. It also prove a point that anything from the 50's NEVER ran a SBC!!!lolololol JimV
Cool. Thanks for finding that info. I'll have to drive by the old track location on my way home tonight.
I went to high school with a guy whos dad was in a club in Ames ( I think ) the club was the "modifiers" ... He always talked about his dads chopped shoebox... Thats a great pic of a Hot Rod out of the midwest!

I just found this on the AHS website. I live near where this was. I read "2 miles south of Ames" and kept thinking south of my house. It was actually NORTH of my house. It ran parallel to the State Nursery, where there's nothing but crappy 1980s construction homes. So it's long gone, unfortunately. Otherwise I'd share a photo or something. I drew green lines where the drag strip probably was located. Right on top of houses. It might have been further east and run all the way to the river though. Bummer.. I wanted to see the artifacts.
