I have a friend that raced in the 60's, he always reffered to these silver driver suits as "Baked potato" suits. With the number of times he was on fire I guess that's about right.

Sweet pics....thanks so much for sharing them!!!! Anyone got any pics of a 55 Chevy named "Barnes & Sperry"? Raced at Thompson, Dragway 42 and Natl Trail.....if so, it would be appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Jim

I've aready been through the on-topic door cars for this round of updates, if there is no pic of that '55 in the earlier posts then I probably don't have it.
Here's a cool shot. I really like how close it is and down at driver level.

I don't guess you have come across a picture of this Vette have you. You gave me some leads before but I still haven't been able to get any information. I know it ran at the National Trail Raceway but I just can't find any pictures. It was green and I think it was called the Inferno and nick-named the Frog because it bounced down the track. At least that is what I've heard.

    Thanks

No, no new info on the 'Vette, other than what I had sent you before. Seems "The Frog" was actually on it one time from what I hear, but maybe that is just cloudy memories.

The Barnes car still lives, but in a different format. Bill Mitrovich bought it and had an axle and other mods made. He raced it for a couple years. A west sider now owns it and has restored it as a gasser street rod. The story is on Byron Stacks Gasser Madness site in the lost and found. Richard was reunited with the car at one of the first Thompson Gasser Reunions. He brought out his 33 and raced it in its late 60's paint and trim.
Here is a Bob Wenzelberger shot of it.

I really enjoy your pictures. Got any more of The Wildcatter or Frank Boggess's WV Hemi Charger '65 Dodge?

Crider was from Salem, Ohio and Sam Brown Dodge was also located in Salem. Yes, it was an injected hemi dragster that he called Super Bee. It was painted in that bright green color that was used on some Dodge Super Bees. Later on he changed it to red. I'm not sure what, if any, other colors he had on it. Then later on he joined Joe DeSantis and ran an A/Street Roadster.

Thanks for the info!!! and the pic. Les Barnes has been my neighbor for years and his brother and I have talked many times about the Willy's and the 55 (mainly me trying to get him to sell me the Willy's....HAHA). Les Barnes and I have been working on my 33 Plymouth for the last couple years.....the hot roddin runs in the family.

Thanks again for the details......small world.

There is a shot of the Wildcatter on page 8 of this thread, it is in the far lane of the photo. That's the only only other pic I have come accross. Not sure about the Boggess car, you may want to check out the early pages of this thread.

Man, I love all the connections being made on this thread - that's what this site is all about.
These cars had to be a kick to drive - your butt 3" off the ground and a boilin' slick at each elbow!

I know all the pragmatic reasons for the RED becoming the dragster of choice, but they just don't do it for me like a FED
