A competitor of ours went under and we went over to see what was up for auction. I got this on my own for a buck. Though I haven’t the slightest idea what it is I couldn’t let it go, mostly because it has the cool handle and all of the holes and just looks like a tank, heavy as one to. Thing is, it has to be made usable or it has to go. Some kind of press I guess and I am going to start playing with it, maybe mounting a bottle jack or something. I just don’t press that many bearings to solely dedicate it to something like that.

    Ideas welcome!!! Thanks.

That is a rare dragracing accessory, a Bell Helmet co. ear plug installer! You set one plug on the little circle, stick the other to the plunger with spit, and lay your head in there while Mongo pulls the lever. Those people who shell out thousands for old fueler face masks will pay even more for this. Vintage race gear is HOT!

Might be a brake lining rivet press. What kind of vertical travel does it have when you pull the lever?

ha!!! google rules jokers…and then I was able this morning to track down the previous owner that we bought all of this equipment from :) This started out life as a taper press. This particular one was made in the 1920’s and used by a rail car manufacturing company. The company we purchased all of this equipment from had moved into the building previously owned by the rail car company and there was some miscellaneous equipment left behind. They have been using this as small motor and transmission bearing press.

I have decided to turn it into a dual application press for bell mouthing holes and punching louvers. With the flat face located on the above housing I can attach an assembly to extend the neck out. Then by attaching a Bell Helmet© name plate with a model/serial number I can fool everyone as to the real purpose.

This machine really wouldn’t satisfy as an apple corer (the average apple is 3.25” in diameter) or as a sexual device as the stroke is a mere 2.125”. That said, I may have stumbled onto a third application thanks to oilslinger53. I have just ordered some muffler bearings from a guy on ebay that claims they are the real deal. Must be, they were very expensive. Please keep your fingers crossed, hell, for some of you your legs to.

    I'll take a serious guess.....

Maybe a valve spring press for cylinder heads?

Or an everlasting beer tab popper....
