Features Old License Plates are always cool

They probably just think the color goes better with the vehicle than the standard plates. In my opinion they do look better.

My latest Ebay impulse buy. 1942 Pennsylvania plates with matching 1943 renewal tags. The patina on these is amazing; still covered with Pennsylvania coal soot.

Years ago, I noticed a couple of license plates on the edge of the roof of the granary on my ancestors farm. It only seemed like a couple of plates, and I have never been to close to the side of the family that ended up with the farm. Recently, I noticed that the rest of the roof is shot, so I asked if I could pull them off the roof. 45 minutes of work yielded more than 40 plates between 1916-1931. The majority are matching plates, and there are a number of the small 1/2 ton and 1 ton plates from the '20s. Rusty, full of nail holes, but still gold. Plus, I got to talk about my ancestors, their farm, and pick up a couple of other trinkets.

About ten years ago I went to look at a barn that was going to be torn down. One side was shingled with New York license plates from the 1930's. All consecutive numbered, guy had some deal with the DMV and got all the unissued plates at the end of every year for a long time. Took photos, but they are now misplaced. Bob

no offense to who ever owns this but if i had my choice i would not have the two plates required by law on my car, let alone screwing them to the interior. looks messy, acoustically terrible and uncomfortable other than that..........

 

The wife picked this set of unissued mint plates for my coupe, still in original packaging.

 

I don't know "WHEN" this story above happen, but I got stopped in Arizona with BIG RED (in picture.) The MAN ask me why I was driving a dune buggy on a city street, I have a 1950 Washington plate on it
In Washington State, if you license your vehicle with a plate of the same year, they are good forever, and you don't need front plate.

So he holds me there for 20 minutes (reg, ins, lic, vin number) I said call your Officer in Charge, he said "Why?" I said I want to talk to him. He comes, I am on my way, 5 mins tops. A week later I am doing 30 mph, in a 25, get a ticket for $125.00 same little officer .
I go straight to City Hall, tell man there, the situation, show him ticket, he rips in half, turns puts it in wastes basket. Turns around says if you have any more issues, Let Me know.
HE WAS THE JUDGE. I 've had no more.

How I wish PA would allow me to run a plate with my target build date, 1964. YOM just wouldn't be right. There's some '55 and '57 Maryland plates around here, pretty sure the colors changed yearly then. Pix at 11. Eventually, MD went to the (almost) Ford blue letters on a white background like Scooterville showed us. Funny, white is a more universal color, but odd background colors like the pukey yellow go with so many builds.
