Customs Old custom 40 Merc resurrection part one:

Well today's adventures started at 3am, when a few of the guys and I left concord Nc and headed to Missouri. I had bought a car sight unseen, going off of two very poor pictures that I pulled off the ford barn. The car was listed with better pictures here on the hamb, but that post had been deleted long before I called about the year old ford barn post.
These are the pictures I had to go off of..... Not so good




Well I called the gentleman about the car, and was blown away.first that he still had it, and more so when He said, "It's an old 40 mercury that some a$$ hole did some custom work to".
Naturally I inquire.... "what all did they do?"
He says "they raised the fenders up on the car and welded them on, then they cut the damn firewall out and lowered the f'in body over the frame."

My eye grew larger and larger the more he cussed at the "guys" that built the car. I couldn't hardly keep composure!
He went on to list a few other things about the car..." the hood has been modified to fit the raised fenders, the cut the X member out and it has a different rearend."

Then I really almost loose my stuff when he makes mention of the engine that comes with the car.... That's nowhere in the add.
He says, "it's just some old... Hell I don't know what year... Cadillac engine, let's call it early 50's. With some adapter to hook it to a top shift ford transmission"
Well I'll be damned, I didn't see that coming!
We talk money, he gives
Me a price and the money is in the mail.

 

Well back to the road trip.
So 13 hours later we end up at toms place to get the car together and the parts loaded.




AND who In their right mind is going to drive all the way to Stanton MO the weekend of the 19th and not drive the extra 4 hours to Joplin?!
Car in tow, hamb drags here we come!

I remember seeing that add...that car was gutted out.good luck with the project.

 

-The cad mill is a 51 331
-The trans is a 46-48 opendrive truck toploader
- and the "10 bolt rears(came with two)" were early 9" ford rearends.

Yea it's definitely gutted, but I've got a few leads on some solid parts cars. I'll finish my 49 merc then dive head first into getting this thing turned around

The car was finished and running in 1962 it's been molested and dismantled ever since then. I've got the owners info, I'm going to call him when I get back to nc.

This was really one hell of a long shot! It all started because my Buddie and club brother Dustin was hounding the hell out of me trying to buy my 30 model a coupe.... I told him to find me a 39-40 Merc. He looked and looked until I reminded him of one i saw on the ford barn, he got me the number and i called Tom.... the rest is history.

 

And mr. Bandito, if youve got any parts your lookin to off-load Im in collection mode.

DAMN! SUPER STOKED for you. I was waiting for this thread to pop up after reading terds. Someday I will get a 40...... thats the one for me. cant wait to see what you do to it.
