Stogy, the photoshop looks great and is sure presents options realistically. I just picked up a '39 Merc 4 door with other plans in mind. After seeing some of these photos, I am reconsidering my plans (and it was almost a "this is what I'm gonna do". Hmmm

Thank you, yes these 38 to 40 Fords and Mercs really wear this look well...glad you're being inspired as well...heck I'd do one this way myself if I had one...

...This mod felt a bit like Fine Art...So did the others...I re-positioned and modded the Driver Mirror but that may entail a slightly bigger round mirror of similar vintage...Note the dome cover center dome with Starburst similar to Studebaker...the blue is body color...I straightened the DD Handle, Closed the trunk..was it open Van...my eyes said yes...Added some Carefully thought out Text and striping in inspiration of 1963...;)

Nice Custom...Subtle Nose up...and the Harmony of Exhaust

  5. I thought about this thread recently when I saw some pictures of Dennis Varni's 39 Mercury sedan. A car worth studying.

    CAN OF WORMS TIME:eek:

OK guys, I gotta ask...can someone tell me what is the reasoning behind the "tail-dragger/nose-up" look?

    To me they always look like;
    a) A car with too much crap/weight in the trunk.
    b A car with weak/broken rear springs.
    c) A project car with the engine pulled out.

Admittedly, I'm more of a hot rod builder, and have only built 3 customs (2 nose down, 1 level) and could never understand the purpose or benefit of that ass-draggy look...educate me.

Perhaps it's an East Coast, West Coast deal...the last Inspiration I shared is near level with still a slight bit of nose up...

  8. Nose up back down was the "speedboat" style back then. In fact, 53-54 Corvettes were purposely built with the back end lower than the front. I heard that from a 99 pt. restored 54 Corvette owner. He said engineers wanted it to look like a rocket taking off.

My grandpa said he would carry several 50 lb bags of sand around in his drivers to get the back end down.

There is no need for a practical reason for the "style" of an era.

...Here's a bit better look at those details albeit still a bit pixelly due to the type of program used...

    I figured you would get a chuckle...I did too...:D

  10. Easy answer.
Those that don’t get it, don’t get it.
Honestly, in my worthless opinion, the nose down hot rod stance only looks good on a few post 1934 rides.
That being said my bus is lower in the front.
It depends on the vibe of the build.
Tail dragger stance looks proper on the right style.

  12. Nose down sometimes looks like something broke during hard braking.
Or the GF broke something posing on the hood.

This has never been able to be explained to a street rodder, Tail draggers were popular in the early fifties for customs, most hot rodders don't like customs so, in turn they don't get it Nick-matranga-1940-mercury3.jpg

...Many ways to capture a vibe but suspect this is nose down different with many details which is being questioned for the why of as we are moving along...

At this juncture it is a different look potentially period related with a chop...and yes, nicely executed...

It actually may be so in Traditional Custom any where in the Hamb History...I'm not privy to that History really...Perhaps as I mentioned earlier the look may be Hybrid, Regional and possibly post 65...

Agreed, I only shared it because someone mentioned it without substance...I like the look Van is working on...which is I suspect a more Traditional stance...

Was nose down ever a Custom Thing?...

I guess I should read @Sancho's shared link to @Rikster's story on it...just thought it may be be a yes or no.

  20. I’ve been scouring through AD truck pics looking for the “look” I plan to achieve for my 49.
I keep coming back to this.

    And this

Can’t explain why. I just can’t get a hot rod vibe for it.
It’s aLWB. I younger me bought a nice SWB bed and frame but now I could care less. Probably keep it LWB.

It seems it was all over the map depending on region, period and individual taste...slight nose up works for me...

  23. The pic was obviously taken when the car was decelerating

That to me, is the perfect stance. It makes you wonder are you a custom car with something under the hood, or?

  26. Thanks @Stogy fir all the fantastic photoshop and thanks to everyone for the compliments.

With the car being a 4 door a “ hot rod” is out of the question .

I like the steel wheels and caps look , but again on a 4 door I think it would either make it look stock or like a “poser” hot rod .

The shape of these cars lends themselves nicely to a lower ass end .

the front is going to come down 1”-2” I got shackles on order .

im lazy and only have the week ends to work on it .

I did a bit last week end under the hood and I got a no start over the winter , no spark . Bad coil .

Im doing a full tune up , coil and duraspark box and some wiring this week end .

I got the metal I need to modify the skirts hopefully I got some time at work to mig it together .

Full time job , 2 kids and a house I’m busy man !!! But I love where this project is going .

I found a Stewart Warner motominder at the swap meet this week end I need to install

The red Tudoor what mirrors are on it ??? They loook great

my peep mirrors are absolutely useless

OK, I guess I really am too much of a hot rodder to "get it".

This car looks fast just sitting there...streamlined and ready to cut the wind, ready for action on the street, or even the dry lakes:)
...while this car, although just as streamlined as the sedan, just looks slow...and probably presents itself best by just sitting there.
