    Ahh, spring is in the air

    Absolutely perfect weather today, and it turns to shit for the weekend .

    Still getting tyres sorted for the coupe. The replacements for the rear are going back to the supplier - bad vibration and really difficult to balance. Front wheels are at the sand blaster, and will hopefully be fitted with tyres in the next coupe of weeks.

  9. Thank you! A friend of mine on the east coast sent me some photos as he heard about my project. He had no use for the flywheel and midplate, and I had a few headers sitting around so we did some trading. That's what Hot Rodding is all about!

    The water manifold was made for overhead cams, with this you are pumping water into all the original block ports. Takes a bit of drilling, grinding and sealing. IMG_0522.jpeg IMG_0523.jpeg

  12. Can we talk about distributor's ? I saw this photo posted on the interweb's and have never seen this before , was a early V8 distributor on a 4 banger a thing ? If so what is the story ?

  13. Jason Roth, a younger cat up near Sacramento did this. He used an A transmission input shaft housing, and a Model A distributor, and made it into a temporary adapter for a helmet distributor.     At first glance, using the V-8 distributor to fire a dual plug head looks like an easy alteration to me. You might get by with just moving the rotors to 180 degrees apart. Probably a custom points cam. Cheap to get parts to hold in your hands and study off ebay.
    Looks like it already has dual points. You should be able to fire one plug slightly before or after the other.
    The cool factor would be huge.

    One coil should be sufficient I would think. One coil fired 8 plugs on the V-8. You wouldn't get much soak time for the second plug, but a single cylinder 2 stroke can run happily at 12,000 RPM so a little flathead 4 should be able to get to 5,000 or so.

    Just imagineering here, but it looks completely feasible to me.

    ...some of my ideas don't work out like I hope they will, but this looks fairly simple.

    Been awhile since I looked at a V-8 rotor, but it would need to be modified to fire the 2nd set of plugs as well. Modifying a conventional rotor is pretty straight forward, but the Ford v-8 rotor mod might be bit of a challenge.

    I completely agree that modifying this V8 dizzy to fire a banger would be a relatively easy project… it’s the dual plug discussion that makes things more complicated. Just because there are 2 sets of points does not make this a dual ignition dizzy, this is actually 2 separate 4 cylinder distributors that fire from the same coil. The 2 point sets should fire at equal and oscillating intervals, never together.

    To fire twin plugs in a banger it would need to trigger the 2 point sets simultaneously (or only a few degrees apart) in order to deliver 2 separate sparks, typically from 2 separate coils.

    Guess it may be possible to rig up a modern waste spark ignition coil to fire the pairs of plugs in series, from one side of the dizzy to the other. This is getting fun!:p

    I have one of these dizzy's that was run on a vintage 30/98 Vauxhall, I have never looked into the dizzy to see what was changed - if anything... Hmm interesting

    A huge amount of work for the fun of it, and a huge cool factor. I get that.
    A friend adapted a full electronic distributor from something unspeakable for his B about 40 years ago. Says it will light wet grass. Totally uncool, but super reliable. My own choice is one of those big, old, finned coils from the 50's.
    Currently running a Lucas 'high energy' finned coil with an old t.a.c. unit . Looks good and make big sparks.

    No ruckus here, just good ol brainstormin!

    Here’s a pic of the early V8 rotor. The coil has a carbon brush that contacts directly to the center of the spool shaped rotor. Essentially making 2 separate 4 cylinder distributors firing from the same coil.

    Would be a neat project to build a rotor with 2 slip rings to separate the dizzy into 2 separate ignition circuits. Then would only need to wire the points (or maybe convert to pickups) to complete. The biggest challenge may be finding the dual plug head…:eek:

    If you want to run 2 coils, while you have the rotor apart to put the terminals 180 apart disconnect the close terminal from the center conductor. Then you can run one coil through the center of the rotor to the far end and slip ring the close end and tie it to the terminal on the outside of the rotor.

    Probably have to cut up 2 rotors to make it work.

    ...or in my case, several, haha.

    That will take some work to separate the two circuits and insulate properly

    As for dual plug heads they are more prevalent than you might expect
    Charlie Yapp has the Lion and latest with dual options
    Older McDowell OHV had duals

    I picked up a cast iron 'LION' head last spring with dual spark plugs. It went on a friends banger. He installed plugs supplied by Charlie in one set of holes so he could run his FSI ignition, but it came with a dual dizzy off I think a Toyota which will be installed later.

    image.jpg So the PO of my pickup gave me this stuff with it. It's model A stuff from the 70's. Argentina. Wiring harness etc..Just like the chinese stuff none of it fits worth a damn heheh.
