My great uncle Rex joined the USMC in Nov 41'. His first duty was aboard the USS Yorktown (CV-5) in Midway as part of the Marine Detachment. It's my guess that based on his experience when the Yorktown was sank, he later requested assignment with a Raider Bn. He ended up being assigned to Kilo Company 3rd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment. I recently got a copy of his record book from the archives. His brother, my grand dad ended up in the Army and fought in Italy with the 10th Mountain Division. They were the greatest generation.
