I'm not a big model builder, but i really enjoy it when i do build one. Anyhow, i always wondered where can you get some spare parts, like wide whites, maybe different engines, hubcaps etc. besides the obvious of buying a model kit of the car the parts came off of. looked around but couldn't find anything on the matter. thanks!

    Ace:

You aren't far from me. I have boxes full in the garage and need to get rid of some. There is a possibilty that I'd be going through Nelsonville Saturday.

Stand out by the shoe store and I'd throw them out the window on my way by.

Seriously, if you want a bunch PM me.

You guys have provided some great sources for parts. But can I suggest in this internet age that you try to strike up local relationships? I'm lucky to have 2 hobby shops within 25mi. of me. But between the two they carry everything from bicycles to live fish, and of course a good selection of hobby supplies etc... What I'm sayin is that while you're obviously not going to pay hobbyshop mark up on some items, you'll find things that make it more enjoyable or more detailed than you'd planned and other kits you've just gotta have! Not to mention the other distractions. I really enjoy the whole trip to the store. From the anticipation, to sharing progress and stories to bringin home the new booty! You won't get that ordering parts from the screen you're reading this from...

  9. A lot of spare parts come from other kits that the builder owns. There's no '29 Ford Tudor Sedan so I bought a '31 and a '29 pickup. I grafted the '29 cowl onto the sedan then ground of the reveal to replace it with strip plastic.

Also check ebay for "Model Car Junkyard". I've bought a few auctions like that, each with several old kits. All kinds of subjects; pre-war coachbuilt classics, street rods, and exotic cars. Scored a Maserati Bora that way :) .

If there's a big model contest near you, go to the swap meet section. I once bough a box of all kinds of previously built cars. Some I don't like as-is, but they may be cannibalized for future projects. Hey there's no tellin' what you might dream up in the future. One auction had a late '60s Cadillac that was narrowed in width at the front and fitted with a Lancia Stratos greehouse.

A lot of larger hobby shops carry extra parts that you can purchase in packs suck as wheels, tires, engines, etc.

wow. didn't expect this many responses! THANKS! lot's of good stuff here.

wvenfield, i'll be out there. i'll wear flourescent orange gloves so you see my hands!

Hey rooster, you're in Milan huh? i (not currently) am over in Rochester (just SE of wellington). i get over to wakeman often. not far from you. What shops do you go to?

biggest reason for looking at places online is because i despise the city, and i don't live near any to begin with... there's no real hobby shops around and the ones that i know of carry squat! i appreciate all the help.
