    Fish Carburetor
I have picked up a early Fish carburetor and am requesting information on this unit from anyone that can help me. I realize that many of you may have never heard of this carburetor, but I am sure a few of our more seasoned individuals are aware of it its existence. I have little printed data on it and am looking for more or leads to someone who may be familiar with this unit. Appreciate any help you may be able to supply!

This is my current project at work, circa 1925.
It's from a French Salmson Cyclecar. It is a gear driven dohc 1100cc (67CI) with bucket shims. 2 bearing crank. It is a beautiful little engine, but it is not very stable & very finicky to get right.

    Sorry about the dodgy photo's

My 30 Coupe has been running really good over the past year until last weekend while driving on the way home. After flawless operation for 10 miles, no sooner than shifting 1st to 2nd gear after a stop sign, out of nowhere the Engine became louder like a tractor and had trouble going 25 to 30 mph. I also noticed whitish gray smoke coming from the tail pipes from acceleration. I am running a Snyders 5:5 high compression head, Ansen single down draft intake manifold with an English Stromberg 97, and tube headers with straight pipes to the back. The distributor is stock and is a 12V system. Fortunately this happened less than a mile from my house so I limped home. Upon removing the spark plugs, 1 & 2 cylinders looked good however 3 & 4 had oil on the electrodes. I have not taken a compression test but wondering what could have let go to cause the poor performance and smoke. Although I am running straight pipes, whatever this problem is, the exhaust sounds much louder. The oil looked good and not milky so I am ruling out blown head gasket. I am wondering if the piston rings gave out or possibly the one or 2 of the valves? Appreciate any other suggested areas to troubleshoot. The whole ordeal is odd for there was no warning or any indications of a problem.

White smoke is a blown head gasket or corroded

You can blow a head gasket between cyls between 3&4 without touching the water jacket. I have done this & it sounded like I had done a big end....

Appreciate your lead, I don't know why "Steve Dummy" didn't think to to go to the HAMB first, I am not on the computer too often really never there. There is a wealth of Fish info on there from Canada, England, US and Germany, thanks again!

@Crazydaddyo - Do you mind sharing how you got that so smooth? Just a lot of hours with the die grinder?

Update. Got the Head off this evening and sure enough a small portion of the gasket blew between 3 & 4.

Here's another English banger from the early 20's, this one is a side valve & one that I'm hoping to build with some American hot rodding influence. I think that you will agree that the inclined valves
porting/ relieved block is quite interesting along with a Ricardo designed head.

How does the cam act on the valves? Are there rocker arms or is the whole cam bank offset to accommodate the angle? Very cool!!

Yes the whole Cam/lifter Bank is angled in line with the valves. The block is separate to the crank case & has a full pressurised bottom end. It has 3 main bearings & is 140 CI

  26. Must be a design similar to that of Ernest Henri who brought forth the Ballot and the Peugeot engines in the early 1900's. These in turn were the basis of Harry Millers ideas that Leo Goossen put down on paper. All of which resulted in engines built by Offenhauser and Art Sparks.

I'm not sure of the History of this engine design. It is a Vauxhall the little brother to the big car's - 30/98's - this is their 'cooking model' but includes some nice features. By 1924 (ish) they gained 8 ports & a 4 spd.
I don't know how much benefit the extra ports would be, would be interesting to flow bench test them.

If that's a Vauxhaul of that particular vintage, I'd guess and say Laurence Pomeroy.

Attached is his write up from his presentation to the 1918 sitting of English Society of Automotive Engineers on cam design and spec'ing basis engine bore and valve sizing. Wonder how close he got to those numbers. Interesting book if you can find a copy. Not entirely certain, but maybe the first recorded use of I/E overlap in cam design.
