I am helping a friend remove the transmission in his 38 Chevy truck. I have never worked with a "Torque Tube" Drive train before. Is there any reference material on this. The manual does not cover it. It looks like the differential has to be dropped to remove the tube from the transmission. Any pointers?? A search of the forums yielded nothing. Thanks in advance VDB
The torque tube unscrews from the transmission via that large ring at the pivot ball. The two will slip apart at that time.
When the ring is taken apart you will need to move either the motor/tranny forward or the rear end back to get room to seperate the universal joinf free of the output shaft.
Loosen the knurled nut on the U-joint housing and slide it back towards the rear axle a few inches. Then remove the four nuts / bolts holding the U-joint halves together and remove the U-joint. You can then lower the front end of the torque tube (have a suitable container ready to catch the heavy oil) to get it out of the way of the transmission..
