No, are you sure you are installed right? 390 has pedistal mount rockers ? So preload is a set distance w no adjustability??

We may need more info on your engine....they did build 390 blocks for solid lifters only.
If this is a older engine that had hydraulic lifter that got noise I would look at the oil pump pick up.
They were good about filling up with valve stem seals.

I assume this is a fresh motor because of the break in oil statement. Is it a reground cam with a smaller base circle? Are the push rods the ones that came with this engine? If not check them for length most are 9.59 but they did make shorter and longer ones .

With the wear on the Rockers I would look @ stepping up to a 9.62" pushrod Check and Verify, you wouldn't won't to Collapse the Lifter.........Non-Adjustable should be B&B when ordering. The B&C were for Adjustable.

  12. Engine is a 66 mercury hydralic block.
    Comp cams 292 h cam
59 edsel machine cumbustion chamber heads.
Less than a thosand miles on full rebuild.
    Nos rockers and shafts.
Oil pressure is 22-25 lbs at idle
    55- 60 at freeway speeds.
    Tri power intake.
    Motor runs strong.
    Does not ping under acceration
    Is not lazy .
    Suspected maybe chinese lifters,
So I changed them .used break in oil for a liþle insurance.
I checked the collapsed and pumped up valve tip clearences and the push rods seemed to be within spec .
I am suspecting now that the valve springs may be a bit heavy.

With the valve cover off you should be able to see some of the lifters are the plungers up against the retainers?
