is there a fix for noisey mechanical fuel pump. we have read that lots of new pumps tick. it seems to be missing the rub pad that some pumps have. a few people said the pump should have a spring under the pump arm. a lot of people said they have replaced the pump a few times and they still tick. we wish we could buy an oem pump. we thought carter made high quality pumps.
Cruze the local junk yard / pick a part , bound to be a reasonably fresh pump in an applicable vehicle, I’m always amazed to see how many parts get replaced on some vehicles that still wind up scrapped.
For what engine? The whole world doesn't run on SBCs, after all. A mechanical pump should have some kind of spring pressure against the pump lever to return it to it's uncompressed position. If the pump is actuated by a pushrod it may have a bent or otherwise sticking pushrod which might cause a tick or knock noise.
Probably should just leave it alone. Lucky it even works and doesn’t piss gas or oil all over the place.
Anymore there are fewer and fewer people that appreciate the sound of properly adjusted mechanical lifters. They'd think it was the sound of a flat tappet cam that was wearing itself out! There's still something magical about the sound of a mechanical lifter small block on a cold start-up. Or even a MoPar slant six, for that matter.
