You got no friends? No car club? No buddies w/ cars?

I belong to a car club- going on 25 years.
About every 2-3 weeks- we do a tour somewhere. Last month- we drove to Santa Paula Airport for a tour of vintage planes. In 2 weeks, we drive to a guys car collection (180 miles RT) of over 100 cars for a club tour. Next month, we are working on a private tour of Edelbrock for our club. Today- it was our club picnic. Over 100 cars & 350 people. Very cool to just hang out w/ your buddies.

When there's nothing planned- a bunch of us get together & drive somewhere. A few weeks ago- 10 of us drove to Julian for apple pie- then across some scenic 2 lane roads to a casino for gambling & dinner.

If it won't come to you- make it happen!

I'm with Steve--I'm in a small club--maybe get 10--12 cars at any one time. But we figure out something to do,somewhere to go at least onch a month--and maybe just a couple of us will do a Sunday canyon / mountain run for something to eat.
And if that doesn't work out--I jump in my car and get lost for 3--4 hours. When you live on the beach,it's not too hard!

I'm with SEARCHER & HOT ROD 32-----When living in SOCAL 25 years ago, it was almost impossible NOT to be chompin' at the bit, waiting for each weekend to get there because of the MANY car activities ongoing. After all the many good times with other car owners during those years, we could see the increase of people & cars & congestion coming. So, after retiring we moved North to Bend, Or. in 1984.
Participating in 2 other car clubs here, it became evident that there were just a few really "Drivers", out of that "Few", only 4 or 5 hard core "Linechasers".
So it really don't matter about no places to cruise to, get the drivers to meet at different spots on Friday nites, plan a next day cruise into back roads areas, & watch what will occur shortly afterwards. When word gets around (If cruise is planned & enjoyed), "You build it--& they will come", the satisfaction is the result!!

  8. So make your way over to US-1 and head north. You don't really need to see other rides to enjoy cruisin, right? When you get to Montery make a U-Turn and head back south.

You just used up about 4 hours (or so)cruising and with any luck you enjoyed yourself.

    Well all you old duffers.....

I did a lot of Crusin' here in SoCal in the day. Whittier Blvd, Bellflower Blvd., Tweedy Blvd, Redondo Beach around the pier and Sepulveda, and sometimes the long ride into Van Nuys from Long Beach. The Man was always lurking for the obvious bonehead but if we caught a race we would head for the back streets and get it on. A lot of girls in cars, lookin all the rides, tossin insults, I got a million stories....

We called it the Beach Run...get in the cars, haul ass down PCH especially in the wide open areas, and slow down to crawl...stop....and when light turned green...drags were on!

Not much traffic in those days, let's see if I remember right. Leave Belmont Shore, down 2nd, right on PCH past Starlite Ballroom, Seal Beach, Sunset Beach, race, Jack in the B if we were hungry, Bolsa Chica, Huntington Beach and then park maybe, Endless Summer still playing at the movies there, look for girls, Joe Surf's getting drunk, and the haul ass back home unles we found a party.

Worked fixin tires, changing oil, and pumpin gas for $2.35 an hr - gas was 29.9 cents a gallon 102 octane

Then the gas became an issue with the Arab Oil Embargo 1973 and things have never been the same. People ditched a lot of old cars and started buying Jap crap. I bought a 1967 Lincoln Continental for $100 and ending giving it to the junkyard cause my Mom said I had too many cars. People stopped driving around, gas lines, alternate days...you know the rest.

Today kids hang out differently. Yogurt shops, mall, computer gaming, texting, DVD's and all the rest. Who needs drive-ins and drivin' around to shoot the breeze with buddies and meet girls...what is what drove crusing. That's why American Graffiti hit so close to home for a lot of us. But my daughters can't see anything but- gee that black car looks like yours daddy- in the movie. Today it's Starbucks, Ipods, and Honda Civics.

I could still get into crusing but it's not the same for me. Maybe the Route 66 Rendezvous in Berdoo is as close as it get's. Except for a few kids most are not interested in old cars and old guys reliving their past.

Now if i was a kid today yikes! All those tuner pukes - but have you seen those girls? OMG if they only looked that that in our day!

Man-O-Man that brings back a lot of memories.

My first born was my High School Science Project, so the girls looked like that to me back then....

Anyway, now I live about 5 miles outside a small town here in Texas and cruise my '66 to town every day. Even get a 'Thumbs Up' from the youngsters now and then.

But it's not like living in SoCal and the closest Hot Rod shop is about 90 miles away. Living here is like taking a step back in time; The kids in this little town still enjoy the hamburger drive-in and cruising the main street playing the same good old Rock-N-Roll...

It's like I've always said: "FUN IS WHERE YOU MAKE IT".....!

    Shut up and drive.

Put your girlfriend in the right seat and go for some burgers, and maybe a movie after. Take the long way to and from to get the full hot rod benefit.

Organized fun in a group is usually pretty good, but in a pinch, the locally manufactured kind is just as good.

  12. Funny you bring this up,Jeff. I've been planning a thing called "The Summer Nights Cruise" for about a year! Here's what I had in mind,so far!

#1 We would all meet at the Orange circle and cruise down to Beach Blvd(south)to PCH(north)and drive down to Mel's Diner in Seal Beach for dinner, then cruise back home, wherever that may be.

#2 We would all meet at the Ornage Circle, again,Cruise down the 91 Frwy to the 5Frwy,exit Firestone(west) and eat at Bob's Broiler(after it opens). Then Cruise back home.

#3 Meet at the Orange Circle again,Cruise down the 22 Frwy, exit Beach Blvd(south)to Main St, Hunington Beach, turn right on PCH and Eat Dinner at Woodys Diner in Sunset Beach.

I did "Bad Bob's Run to the Bun" a few years back and it was great! Started at Ports -o-Call and ended in Mission Viejo at a little sandwich shop. About 18 cars and 25 people.

  13. I was thinking maybe on the second saturday of the month. Any thoughts? Anybody else have any ideas? I wanted to start this year but had too many things come up. There's still plenty of time to set this up before the summer ends...

I've posted many drives I have taken after the Anti Donut breakfast here on the HAMB. I would drive all the way to Ports-o-call,over the bridges in Long Beach, turn around and cruise home down PCH then hop on the 55 home.

I'm not about sittin' in lawn chairs with all the old guys with polishing cloths and hiding beers in the trunk so nobody sees. And all they do is beat up defects in other guys rods anyway.

I'm good with actually driving and bullshitting.

What happened on Colorado Bl at the old Winston Tire store yesterday Saturday night? Was it impromptu?

REal crusin' post where and when and i'll try to get there.

Pretty much anytime of day on a Saturday, anywhere near downtown Huntington Beach, there are always a ton of old cars running around. Also, basically anywhere on the PCH on a weekend there are a ton of cool cars and bikes cruising.

They're out there, you just have to find the spots.

  18. I just got back from a cruise in my sled.I went to my favorite place to get a pastrami sandwich (Brea's Best). It's cool its got a old days feel to it and the food is great. Its a good distance and a nice drive to get there from my place, point is I cruised all thru old town fullerton on my way up there and guess what ..... didnt see one other old car. I know it is hotter then hell today and its the hottest day we have had here in a while but come on guys.... get them cars out, I was out there in a old tired flathead sweatin my ass off but still showin people what kustoms are all about.

  19. you're from so cal come on! I will admit you're right, I'd love to find a place with hot rods and kustoms cruisin all night. Visalia was fun to cruise in high school, I had a '56 chevy wagon back then and the next oldest cars were my buddies all with muscle cars. Was still fun to rap the pipes and park infront of A&W for dinner.

  20. Did you read my post,Jeff? I'll cruise with you ANYTIME!!!!! ANYWHERE!!!!

  21. Ya I read that, we should put something together like that. I think that people are not getting the point I was trying to make on here, Yes we can plan a cruise and yes I have friends that I can call to go cruise with but.... I was talking about just old cars on the road in general. Think about it , look at how many cars show up to a advertised car show, there is a lot right ? Then think about how many cars you see if you go for a unannounced drive in your merc. That is the point I was trying to make. I think that some people were taking this like I dont have anybody or any friends to cruise with, which is not the case. I do kind of consider myself somewhat of a lonewolf but I do have friends I can call to cruise with. I guess Its just a different time now, cruising nowdays consists of starbucks and pinkberry . I guess that is why I tattooed " OLD SOUL" across my forearm. Bob I do appreciate your offer of cruising we need to handle that. LONG LIVE KUSTOMS

I'd join in too. Bob you should start a list of people that show interest and P.M. them when short notice stuff comes along. I would have gone to the Force show yesterday if you would had mentioned it to me Yesterday morning at the swap.

When was the last time you went to breakfast? :D:rolleyes:

This is terrible news. I was under the impression that if I came out to Cali, I would have a hard time not seeing pre-1963 cars running the streets out there. I was starting to look forward to it.

A while back, we were driving around one weekend hitting some back roads and some small towns between Dallas and Shreveport checking out some old Movie Theaters and old vintage Downtown areas and we were in this tiny town of Gilmer when we came across this...

Hoovs42 and I cruise every Saturday morning from the Orange circle to the Anti-donut and back. Sometimes we go to a destination after breakfast or just go exploring.

I drive my car all the time around the north Orange County area. I see old cars all of the time here in the city of Orange.

I only have a 66 Elco but I drive it everywhere every single day.
I see a fair amount of older cars daily on PCH thru HB, Seal, and into LB past the traffic circle (what moron decided to call it a "roundabout").

With 700 HP I like to watch Mustang drivers grip their wheels and have ego problems when they're afraid to race a "real" 1960s killer car.
We used to call it "built".

I had one guy chase me down all excited because he noticed my Dana 60 showing out the back under the bumper.

As far as I'm concerned, it's still 1969 and I drive my car because it's my car.

    Why not?

Do I have a reason to drive a 43 year old car? Reason? I don't got to show no stinkin' reason!

If I can get everything worked out right, I plan to get rid of my 2000 Z71 and replace that with a late 50's Chevy Truck as my daily driver. A few more things need to fall into place first though. My daily was a 1964 C10 (Channeled 5" just to see if I could do it. lol ) before the Z71, but it was in need of too much to be used as a daily, so it had to go. It was fun to get the thumbs-up from the teenagers though. Some of them still appreciate the older stuff.

Really? How many miles of road is there in Socal? How many old cars? Suppose the ratio was 1 cool old car per mile of road, what do you suppose the odds are of 2 of them being close enough to see each other at the same time on any given road? Unless you have some form of organized cruise, if you see 1 or 2 on your cruise that is probably killing the odds, even in Ca. Just because you didn't see any on your drive does not mean they are not out there being used, it only means YOU didn't see them. I've been on a cruise with 20 other friends, hit a few red lights, add in a few regular cars, a few hills or curves and in as short as 10 minutes you may swear your out there by yourself, but you know better.

If you want to be sure to see other cars out cruising, have them go with you. Gene

    Maybe I'm missing something.

Cruising and driving are two different things.

I think all of us (well most I hope) go for drives all the time. I take my cars to shows, dinner, the corner store, runs with my club brothers... whatever.

Cruising is a little diiferent. Reason for cruising used to be to get girls... PERIOD. Been married 10+ yrs with 2 kids in the pocket. Cruising is just driving up and down the street wasting gas now.

I love doing it (cruising) but it's not like I rush home on Friday afternoons and iron my t-shirts (Blvd Nights style) getting ready to hit the boulevard for the big cruise.

I was at a show today with probably 200 oldschool bombs and lowriders hanging at a park with friends. I can't complain.
