I havent had any luck finding 50 pontiac grill parts so I figured I would try and make fixing what I had. Work all the damage out with hammer, dolly, and anvil. Welded the crack from the back side and soldered the front. Its by no means perfect but its not bad and useable. Maybe some day I will find replacements.
It looks a lot better than what you started with! As you said, it gets by until you can find another grill.
Thanks all. Im getting better but man, getting the small peening dents out while keeping flat is about impossible. Working on the grill teeth and hood extensions now.
I've got one tooth that's a little wonky but the plating is still good. I can fix it. The chrome piece on the bottom of my hood has a very gradual pushed-in spot on the drivers side. I think I can slowly massage it out too but the long piece below the park lights has rust through on the corners. I got a buddy in Omaha who has several grilles and parts. Maybe I can get a better piece from him.
Thats seems an odd spot for rust through. I actually picked up nos hood grill piece, 4 nos teeth and a nos hood ornament very reasonable (not even close to ebay prices) but I dont want to use them with these damaged/restored parts. If I find better parts, then yes. If not somebody with a nicer would appreciate them.
The few I know of are attached to save able complete cars....not sure if the yard would part with - just the grille. Try Browne's Auto Salvage in Sunset, Tx.
I was able to score a great illuminated hood ornament to replace the chrome one. A Pontiac isn't really a Pontiac unless it's got a light-up hood ornament.
Great score. Well my junk grill is still junk, but its far less crumpled and dull junk. Just a few bolts hold it in
Lookin good! Hey, I was finally able to find the phone number of my buddy who has several grilles and parts to get rid of! He says he's going to keep the best parts to make up a complete grille for his 50 torpedo back and sell off the rest. He may not have exactly what you want but gimmee your "wish list" of grille pieces and I'll see what I can do...
