Kev, what kind of mig wire do you use? My stuff won't look anything like that when I try to spot weld....then again, I am a beginner at this stuff. I'm out of town, don't have access to see what kind of wire I'm using. All I remember is that it's not cheap.

Great work Kev, seeing the amount of cutting, tacking, measuring and countless other things just to get it to this point is incredible.

The car is definitely going to look amazing.

Kev, great stuff, sorta reminds me of Geoff Midford-Taylor's old 34, I think he done the chop a simular way with laying back the front pillars , always did like the stance of that Coupe.

amazing work. that is a pretty complicated roof. looks great!

  9. We've been pretty busy welding and grinding. One more day and we should be done.

Here is the back corner welded up.

  11. Here is the passenger door gas welded up. It's like I told Greg, "We're not trying to make pretty welds, we're looking for full penetretion. The top is getting ground off".

Next the top of the welds are gound off without taking away the sheetmetel around them.

Then everything is cleaned up with a 36 grit sanding pad. It won't take much filler to finish it off.

Dammmm nice......is it going to be a Drag car/Street car?

  13. The back window joint came to a point so I built it up a little with the mig welder and ground it back for a round corner.

I used misc' round stones and wheels to shape the rear window corners and door front corners.

Going to do the inside garnish moldings before doing any bondo work ?

  16. Skip.....It is a street car being built drag style. Greg also plans to make a run or 2 at El Mirage.

Baron....Greg doesn't have any garnish mouldings yet.

Here is a shot for junkyardgenius.....

  17. Slepe67.......I just use regular mig wire .030. Nothing fancy. I do run my welder on the hot side so I get instant penetration. There were many holes blown during the tacking process but I don't show pictures of the really hokey looking stuff. I have a great method for taking care of holes where you just stick the end of a stick of welding wire in the hole and tack it again, works great.

Love the Chop and Coupe Kev thanks for taking the extra time and posting for us all!! Bitchen Buddy!!

  19. Speaking of filling gaps with welding wire. Here is how we connected the top of the B pillar back to the roof. There was a gap, about 1/8" or more. I cut a peice Of thick welding wire and laid it in the back side of the gap, tacked it in place and then mig welded it from the outside and ground it to shape. When I say mig welded I mean alot of spot welds, not long passes. Taking time not to let any areas get too hot and warp.

I did something very similar, but I used a strip of 16 ga on edge, worked well.

helluva way to spend the lunch hour reading this entire thread, great work kev, cant wait to see the finished product

  26. This pic shows how the profile would look if you just lowered the roof straight down and modified the front and rear without cutting the B pillars free and moving them.
