Not all junior stockers were 55-57 Chevys. Here is a C/S trophy run at Vargo Dragway in 1965. The 64 Grand Prix of Richard Scarlett beat the 62 Chevy wagon for the class and then went on to win Stock Eliminator. His winning time in the eliminator was 13.34 at 104.04 MPH.

  3. Here are the 1967 NHRA Winternational results from Car Craft circa spring 67. I will search my files and try to dig up more pics and info later.

Points go to all the guys who guessed Bill Cornelius as the driver of the Nova! I'd know that car anywhere. Bill was my stepdad. I was pretty young when he and my mother married but he was still racing then. I spent many exciting weekends at Cecil and Maple Grove watching him race. He gave it up after a few years being married because of the expense on upkeep. But the car was at the house was many years after. My friends and I used to just sit and gawk at it! He passed away 15 years ago, and my uncle mentioned finding info about him here in those good old days, and I had to come out and see for myself.

Thanks to everyone for posting and for helping keep the memories alive!!!

Friday nights at Cecil County was the place to be.

I was about 16 years old when a friend asked me if I wanted to go to Cecil County one Friday night and living in Connecticut I did not even know where the place was located.
It seemed like we were driving for 3 hours to get there and when I finally said where the hell is this place and he told me we were headed to Maryland and what a great time we had.

    Keep the memories alive. Jimbo

MisterMojo woke me up and jogged my memory of I of a shot I scanned the other day. It reminded me how seldom you had a bunch of quality Jr cars out in Div IV races. In the view I've posted we see Gene Wheeler from Abilene, TX in his Jenkins powered Tuff Texan while on the tower side is Jim Hayter's equally tough E/S from Cushing, OK, both seen here at the points race at La Place LA in May 1967. E/S was a brutal class at this time ruled by 270hp Chev sedans. When these two or visitors like Don Stephenson from Omaha or Jimmy Waibel from FL were on hand, things were always interesting. Guess Gene and Jim got tired of beating up on each other for the following year, Gene put his Jenkins motor in a 57 Vette (ala the Musser Bros?) and ran C/S while Hayter put his motor in a wagon and ran F/S. This stuff is probably old hat to your Div I guys, but these were memorable runs to me. Thanks for listening! [IMG]

Outstanding views! I'd seen some of these cars at the Nationals and World Finals and it's great to see them again. Hope you've got more pictures and stories.

Snook Jacksons N/S 57 Chevy 210 4 dr HT is just about the only other 210 4 dr HT I ever saw in that class other than the "hearalded" McMasters/Nelson (or McMasters/Gunning ) Phila based car! Thanks for the pix 409. Bill Cornelius car is cool too -- Just like Bobby Warrens and a few others like Chuck Gallagher and George Duff. Keep those pix a-comin!

I have mine. Doug Boyce should be patting himself on the back for this one. Much detail and reserch went into it. Easy to read and many good pictures. If you lived it or not, you will know what it was like back then, after reading it. It gets 5 stars from me.

To the best of my knowledge, the white '59 in that picture originally belonged to Wiley Cossey and was originally a 348. If that's the same car, it passed through several owners including Val Hedworth who switched it to a 283 and was eventually brought to the pictured condition by Tony Janes and Leo Kannon. I think it was sold out of the country.
