I have been working on the roof of my sedan for a few weeks now and finally got it 98% done. It's my first build and I knew putting the roof in would be a challenge right up there with chopping the top. With a thin coat of filler I think it will look okay. I reinforced the inside opening with 1/2" tubing to give the new roof skin something to lay on while it was welded in. I have heard alot about roof cracking around he weld seam so I hope the tubing will keep it strong enough to keep that from happening. The orginal roof supports from the wagon I used for the roof are still there but I haven't tied them into the car yet thats the next step. Just thought I would throw some pics up before the race starts this afternoon.
Are those spot welds I see in the center of the skin? If so they will show when things expand and contract................. like say, a cloud passing over on a sunny 90 degree day.
the roof came off an old wagon and I turned it around backwards The wagon had a roof rack on it and the spots in the middle Are where I filled small holes from the rack The supports on the inside have a black cardboard material That is sandwiched between the support and the roof skin So they are not physically connected to each other except At the each end
Thanks It was more work than I expected and the kicker was my car was missing the header cover over the windshield header when I got it and I was having hell trying to figure out what was wrong. Would probably still be scatching my head if it weren't for fellow hambers that straightened me out and got me back on the right track. I am not much of a body man but learning as I go.
So...... leave it unwelded in the middle area so it floats and doesn't bind? I learned something new today already! Can I go home now?
I probably would have tried to spot weld the roof skin down to some supports if I hadn't paid attention to what others have gone through before me here on this site. I replaced all wood and support structure on the inside with tubing, and am wondering if I need to run some across the top from side to side to make the welds hold better or if the original supports from the wagon will be sufficient? I don't want it cracking around the weld seams later on. The body is way stiffer now than when I started so I don't think it will give to much.
Thanks for all the help and the pictures Von. Took me a little while to get it all together right but as I tweaked here and there it finally started looking like it belonged there.
