Hot Rods NEW Olds starter change over adapter available

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Nailhead Jason, Apr 30, 2020.

  1. After talking with someone at Offenhauser last year and working with their distributor in Canada , Offy North, I was able to purchase one of the first of the new Oldsmobile starter changeover adapters from Offy and just received it today. Offy part number #3605 is back in production for the time being. They have not made these in many years and are just making them available now.
I know I looked for a long time to find a good used one and never had much luck. I figured there was good possibility that there is some other guys on here that may be looking for one as well and wanted to pass on to folks on the HAMB that a new one is available if you can’t find one, or bring yourself to buy one of the $600 dollar used ones one eBay that need heli-coils and cracks welded up.

Here is some pics of the brand new one I just got today.

Cool. It's been a bit sparse lately but they were posting "look what we are working on today" posts on their Facebook page. Always fun to see what they have going on.

  4. I hope that this product will help Offenhauser survive it's financial worries. You should be thankful that Offy is making this product again, instead of some not necessarily needed common part.

I see in your other thread that you are working on a 324. Does this only fit the early Olds?

I think I remember paying under 100 bucks for one out of J.C.Whitney back in the 60's.
    I put a 324 Olds in a 50 ford business coupe.

  8. Yes this fits the 49 to 64 Olds 303 to 394. Cadillac's had a similar lower bolt on bell, but they already had the starter on the Passengers side.

  9. They are $500 bucks from Offy. Yeah that's not cheap, but when you need one and the used ones are the same price or more, and need repair just to be serviceable, id go this route all day long. Plus I prefer to spend more on a smaller business, that is making parts in the US. Not some China crap.

I was able to find one for less than the quoted price. It was in good shape, with no problems, but it did take 3 years to find it. The fact that they are available from Offy now may shake a few loose from the guys wanting $750 (yeah, I passed on some at that price).

Mine used the stock Olds starter. I think I remember it being mounted upside down. Been a long time and over 150 cars that I have owned and over a 100 that I have built for other people.

  15. yes it uses the olds starter just upside down. Or you can use a caddy starter and the the solenoid will be up.
