Cragar SS and the Astro Supreme first came out in 1964. Seems perfect for a early 60s styled car to me.

You obviously see things differently than the rest of us with a vision only you must have as to how you want your car to turn out, that doesn't mean it's wrong, just different! If you would have told us your plan to do what you were about to do to a 4 door 54 Desoto I believe that there would've been many sceptics that would think that's nuts, but look at the outcome so far.
I enjoy watching what you do, I mean hell you even customized your English wheel!;) Go man go!

  4. Slopok sums it up absolutely correct and, man, you have shown us your skill and the right attitude of " I will do this and it will look damn good " so, yeah, I love those S/S Cragars too and with the right tyres, will be awesome.

I am waiting for a side view picture with you sitting in the driver's seat with your head over the top of the windshield. Better lower those seats. Excellent job so far.

Good example of the difference between hot rod guys and custom guys.

The hot rod guys see cragars and think white letter tires, muscle cars and mullets

The customs guys see cragars and think thin whites, low riders and bellflower customs

I always check in on this thread because it's glorious to watch this car evolve. The Cragars look traditional enough (squint a little and they could be Astros) and the lowrider vibe contributes to the overall punk attitude of the car. Cool stuff.

Update* I'm still working on getting these wheels on correctly. I'm not happy with the studs my friend made, they weren't straight enough for me to trust. Now I'm trying to use press in studs like a few of you mentioned. I took the front 2 to a local shop to work on. But now another problem....... I can not get the 2 rear hubs off! Ugggghhh! This damn car! 20170426_184138.jpg

Put tension on the hub with the puller, then smack the puller on the side of the round part.

Try the old trick of heating the hub and putting some wax on the threads. I have had some of those not want to budge. I made a hub puller I can strike violently if needed

  20. You are aware, of course, that the judges will knock off points because you don't have the correct acceptable wheels. I caught some crap because I liked the "out of vogue" centerlines on my '34. Remember what Ricky Nelson said......

First always apply liberal amount of penetrant.

Last step is to use a cutting torch.
Many steps in between to be determined by level of frustration and availability of spare parts.

Pros won't like this, but I would be "tappin" on diameter of the drum at 11 and 2 o'clock with the puller tight, around the outboard edge. I use a 2 pound hammer and hit it hard enough to make some noise.

If you are worried about marks, hold a 12" piece of 2x4 against it.

Grind the head off of a rivet. Knock the remainder in. Tap the hole for a button head allen screw. Put one in. Repeat until all of the rivets have been replaced with button head allen screws.

Then you have a removable drum.

I did this on the last Plymouth that I worked on, and then put in grade-8 bolts, from behind. A drop of red Loctite kept them in there.

That was 7-years-ago. Still going strong.

Isn't the hub/drum splined to the axle? Is the axle nut loose on the axle? I see the nut still there but backwards? Looks like you would hammer on the hub while under pressure. Seems like I worked on a 8n tractor with this set up. Only thing holding together was the axle nut.
