Customs New member. Searching for grandfathers old ride

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Searchingforaclassic, Feb 22, 2021.

  1. Quote: 'Assuming the '32 survived the 10 years between being sold, and Street Rodding's resurgence in the early 70's, you can almost bet that it got a repaint and some Torque Thrusts to bring it into a more acceptable '70s/'80s "modern" look'.

Quite possibly but that may be where the unusual dash/interior pics help identify it.

Rumor has it this car may have been painted 'piss yellow/puke green' at some point in the 70's and appeared in some obscure movie :D

  6. I still think there is more info out there though .... someone, at some point, is going to see this thread and remember something about it after your grandfather owned it. It may take a while though ...

Any luck finding the pics with your dad on the seat?

Hey @Searchingforaclassic , I think this has paid off big time for you already. The experience with Phil must have put a smile on your face that will take a long, long time to remove. Shit, I'm smiling from ear to ear..........:D:D:D
Anything from here will be a bonus for sure. I think you have a lot of us along for the ride.

Oh yea honestly I didn’t expect to find this much out. He (Phil) is gonna call me back in a day or two after he gathers everything up such as what photos he can find and any paper work he can find as well. He said he would copy and mail me any photos or piece of paper he had. Like I said earlier he is a strainer shooting super nice guy couldn’t ask for anything more than that. The stories he has are pretty damn cool

You may be absolutely correct...there is a huge chance that it was reconfigured with a myriad of new detailing including paint and due to it's obvious connections to past the owner may not come forward due to a potential shellacking that they repurposed a survivor so to speak...

Sorry not the outcome I wish for the OP but even here there are huge differences in visions of what Hotrod is...

Soak it all up. And remember, Phil is probably enjoying this as well. You have made a great new connection.....

It wouldn’t matter to me if it was painted pink I just need to know. It would be hard to imagine a Watson paint job sanded off but it’s entirely possible. Especially if someone didn’t know him or his history.

    @Searchingforaclassic
I was wondering, have you let your wife/family in on what is going on? All this 'extra time' on the internet may seem suspicious, and lead to speculation that you may have found 'new websites'...........;)

Well let's see there was this Hotrod known as Kookie...

What's a man to do when a Hotrod has 3 or more iconic liverys...having been here for a while seeing iconic Hotrod/Customs left to deteriorate has actually proved quite common unfortunately...Norman Timbs Custom, Kookie, The Sahara, The Purple People Eater Dragster and many more...some of Roths Creations...and and...

But despite the above potential plausible outcomes I am again hopeful you may find a Holy Grail moment...recently there was a 2nd place National Roadster Show Hotrod found in a late sixties 70s disguise...

I heard that when the Studio's bought the American Graffiti Coupe it had a Hemi in it and they took it out and put a small block in it. Who knows weirder stuff has happened

Haha well she has been very inquisitive the past day or two. She said are you looking at porn. I said well some people may say that. Lol she was speechless for a few then wanted to see what I was doing. Her exact words were. That’s the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard you will never find that car. I say hold my beer and watch me (us) go..............

    Just checking in!
@Searchingforaclassic , I kinda skimmed over your story because I was scrolling, wanting to see the latest good news.
Then I saw that @flatheadpete and @Tim said...
    "Holy crap!
I went back and read every word.
    May I say...
    "Holy crap!"

Something's gonna turn up. Maybe not today or tomorrow, not everybody logs on here every day. But somebody who knows something will eventually see this thread.

It was quite the story no doubt. Phil said he feels the reason they left it behind is because it rode so damn rough lol and that was quite the drive lol

    I’ll be patiently waiting...........

The America Graffiti car was not channeled, the original intention was to channel it for the movie but it didn’t get that far.

We all know that Larry Watson has passed on .... but Gene Winfield is still with us and in "their world" of custom painting cars have had to be seen by both.
One could reach out to Gene with pictures and just see what he knows.

No doubt about that you all have been a huge help and most definitely friends for life. The help and generosity of complete strangers gives me some hope for the world and the hope hot rodding will stay alive.

I’m gonna give this some time to pan out before I start doing a replica me and my son need a good project he just needs to be a bit older first so he can appreciate working with me lol

Fifteen years on the HAMB and this has to be one of my favorite threads. What a cool story, especially since you were able to contact Phil.

@Searchingforaclassic one of the things I do in my work is marriage counseling. If your sweet wife needs some counseling re: "the dumbest thing I've ever heard..." I'm available to help! :D

  30. Just want to pile on saying that this thread puts a big smile on my face. I hope that smile gets even bigger if you can actually locate the car in person. The power of the HAMB.
