Greeting HAMB'ers and thank you for allowing me to join. A quick introduction, I am an aircraft technician with the Royal Australian Airforce and am currently posted to the USA. I have picked up a 1954 Chevy 210 two door which I will take back to Australia when I return home. In Australia I have a 1929 DeSoto 4 Door Tourer and a 1967 MGB that I am currently hot rodding. I hope to be able to learn the finer points of building and styling for 50's - 60's hotrod and look forward to the advice and knowledge offered from all members. Grant
Welcome. If your in VA hit me up there are some Aussie guys stationed where I work. I won't ask where your at. I know the rules for deployment!
Welcome Grant! We have lots of Aussies and Kiwis on here. We like 'em too, even though they sometimes use funny words.
glad to have you here - USA/H.A.M.B. - looks like you found a Cool ride - have more pics/info on it to post here? are there restrictions on what can be done to a car shipped to Australia?
Welcome. The HAMB also has a lot of members who worked on Aircraft when they were in service of their country. I guess it is a very good foundation for building hot rods.
Welcome Grant from Austin, Texas When you return to AU, check out Maskels Customs in Vic. One of his cars made the Great Eight in Detroit which is a great honor for an Aussie or anyone else. I was lucky to tour his shop last week, and was very impressed with the quality and variety of cars. Everything from a Rolls Rpyce re paint to a 32 Tudor ford hot rod. Don't miss if you get the chance.
Welcome aboard Grant. If you get to 'Vegas, give me a shout and I'll buy you a cold one. Im a retired A&P mechanic.
Thanks for all the kind welcome messages. I have just returned from the Pigeon Forge Rod Run WOW. As I begin the journey with my 54 Chevy, and start the modifications are there any styling or mechanical changes I should avoid. As I wish to have a late 50's early 60's look some guidance on the pitfalls to avoid would be welcome. My 54 has a 350 SBC with a 4 speed Saginaw trans and 10 bolt 6.5" open diff. It has the original front king pin suspension however has lowered uprights, the rockers are about 8 " of the ground measured at the B pillar. The interior has front bucket seat fitted, and the remainder is stock. Cheers, Grant
Nailhead Jason, I know this will sound a little strange, but I believe most cars suit a certain style and somethings should not be attempted or added to certain cars. As such I'm not sure which way I will lean. I can tell you that I don't want it so low it's a pain to drive, however I do like it reasonably low, and for me fat rear tyres is a must. (Australian spelling) Tires for the USA readers.
I hear and then understand you. And yes fat rear tires are mandatory! Mine is in progress. Here are some pics of mine with the biggest tire I could fit the n the back. Still Need to lower it a bit more and the stance will be just right.
Very nice, can I ask what size the rears are ? i saw some at pigeon forge on the weekend, and most were running 235/70/15, mine has little 7.50 14 at present. I really need to convert to radials.
