My new project is a stock (as far as I know) '54 GMC. I'm working on getting it running/driving before I tear it apart so I know the condition of the engine/trans/diff. The seller claims it was running before the fuel pump went out so I'm starting there.

Looking through various sites I see a 248 listed for a '54 GMC vs a 235 Chevy. How do I tell for sure what I have? The fuel pumps for the Chevy inlines seem to be basically the same into the '80s but not sure if the 248 would be the same or not...I think it was a GMC produced engine? Napa shows a fuel pump for a '54 Chevy 235 but not a '54 GMC 248.

Just behind the dist is a flat id pad with the engine id on it. The first 3 numbers are the engine size.. 228-248-270-302
here's a link to a helpful ID page for GMC's

I believe the fuel pump is the same.
The GMC engine is 2" longer than the chevy.

I got an assembly & a maint manual ordered this morning so that will help with some things. The fuel pump I took off looks a lot like a 235 pump although I didn't put them side by side to compare. According to the parts store listings the factory pump included a vacuum pump on the top to run my wipers...I found the wiper vacuum lines unhooked under the dash so I think that is the version I need.

Thanks for the ID number location info...it is a 248.
