Get in touch with your local machine shop. I have done some of this with old cam and crank gears. They work great. Gene.
Machine shops, Engine rebuilders, Diesel and farm machine repair places, scrap yards, etc... Shouldn't cost much being as the are throwing them out anyway.
When i was scrapping an old farm last year the scrapyard had gears laying around, i got some for a friend that was using them for art too.
A friend who is a heavy equipment mechanic makes sculptures like that using large gears from Caterpillars. Check with heavy equipment repair shops.
