I am hoping someone can set me straight. I am ready to install the axles in my new Moser housing. The inner axle seals are installed but I am worried because every othet 9 inch axle I have been looking at seems to have O rings on the bearings and mine dont?

Am I headed for trouble without o rings on the bearings?

If there is an inner seal that seals the housing to the axle, and you have sealed pre lubed bearings, then you don't need to worry about O rings on the bearings. There are some bearings that have an oil seal on one side, and don't have a seal between the housing and the axle, and they need O rings to keep the gear oil from seeping past the bearings.

    at least that's my understanding...

You are just fine. The oil ring bearings work and add an extra seal but are not required as long as you have the inner seal installed correctly.

I think you're in trouble for not having the bearing retainer on the axle before the bearing was pressed on. What'sgoing to hold your axle in?

Yup. Take it apart & install the retaining plate.

Thought you could buy split/u shaped retainers?

Maybe. Wouldn't split retainers leak oil?
    It's been 30+ years since I rebuilt a 9" ford.

Retainer just holds the axle in, it doesn't seal anything. The inter seal does that.

The tapered roller bearings have the o-ring and an external seal. They are lubed by gear oil. The type you are using is permanently greased and uses the inner seal. No o-ring needed.

Yer right. Mine had a gasket, but also had a weep. It's not a seal--It only kept the eventual oil seepage off the brake shoes, directing it through the backing plate as I recall.

Wow! that Ford was the first car I ever owned. Tough to remember back that far, but my Edsel and my OT Cougar both had the same system.

So what's the advantage of the split retainer? Is it just for forgetful machinists? I can't imagine it's a part that gets changed regularly.

It was made for people who take the rear ends apart a little more often (racing).
