Hi guys, I need some help. I have a Ford toploader manual 4 speed out of a '68 - '71 mustang, that ist bolt to a 8BA flathead engine. I have a Hurst competion / plus Shifter for that transmission, the part no. is 3910014, I also have the linkage but no idea how the linkage is connected to the transmission. I hope that one of you guys have a pic were I can see the installation of that shifter. Thanks Here are some pics of that transmission and the shifter.
Where is Meangene427 when you need him. The two dogs together should be your 1-2 and reverse, but don't take my word for it.
The levers point up on the trans. The front lever is 3rd and high, it hooks to the shifter on the lever that moves with the shifter to the right (without going into the reverse gate). The rear lever on the trans is reverse, it hooks to the shifter lever that moves when the shifter goes in to the reverse lockout. The middle lever hooks to the only place left........ By the way, if you have an Orion OD trans, the front lever points down, not up. I know you said its an older 'Tang trans, but I'm just sayin'........
Cut & weld & bend the rods as nessasary. NOTE: The threads on those Hurst rods tend to strip out with long term use. I welded mine to lock them in after proper aligning.
Do a yahoo search for Ford toploader the yahoo image site will show several pictures of Ford toploaders.
I did a search with google, there are many pics of the transmission and the shifter but not both bolted together and with the linkage.
here is a pic of the plate. The engine and transmission combo was installed in a '53 Ford F100 before I bought it. Maybe the custom plate was used on the F100. @R Pope I will try to install the linkage the way you described tomorrow. Thanks for that.
Here is a toploader with a Hurst shifter and factory rods. On trans, Front lever is 3-4, middle is reverse, rear is 1-2. On shifter, farthest out is 3-4, middle is 1-2, most in is reverse.
Thanks guys for the pics and the description, these are helpful. Now I know why it can't work, the guy who dissambled the linkage connected the linkage rods to the wrong shifter arms, the long rod is connected to the inside arm and not to the outside. Thats the reason why these rod is blocking the other two when I tried to connect them to the transmission. @HotRodMicky Hallo Micha, ich will hinfahren, ich denke mal du bist mit deinem 32er fertig. Dann werd ich mal Ausschau halten. This is german for the guys who wonder in which language I wrote.
It's done and it works. I turned the crankshaft on the 8BA and the yoke was turning too. Thanks again
Hi, was good seeing you again! Just too little time to talk at the drags.. So next year we race at the Fiwa drags ! Micha
