I'm trying to visually ID a motor that a friend found. Small block, 5 bolt bell, has a breather up front and very short valve covers. If I remember right the casting said it was from '63

Anybody care to school me on these little guys?

I have several pics of those engines, but visually a 221 and a 260 ...and even a 289 are almost indistinguishable from each other. You WILL need to get some #'s off of the block.

Even that might be iffy. When I was trying to identify one of those things, I finally had to pull a head and measure the bore.

    Hope this helps.

221 and early 260's had 2 soft plugs per side. Late 260 and 289's have 3 soft plugs per side as do 302s. Look at the cast number on the block next to the starter. There is a part number and the date code. Tell me the date code for further info.

the only difference visually between the 221/260 and 289/302 is that the oil fill is a tube located next to the generator bracket rather than having a filler in the valve cover. also 221's dont have breathers in the valve covers if that helps

1963 260s had breathers in the valve covers. I have a 1963 Falcon with a 260. I also have two 260s in the shop, both 1963.

The intake manifold has a C3 casting date. I didn't spot any cast numbers around the starter (starter is missing so it's easy to check)

It has the breather tube up front and has 2 frost plugs per side. So I'm content with the 221/early 260 description until he pulls it apart and can figure exactly what cid is.

    Again, thanks.........

I think I can give you a little more info.

The one I have is a 221. It was original to my '63 Fairlane.
It had NO breathers in the valve covers and yes it does have two plugs in each side, where my 289 has 3.

    The breather thing is interesting....
I wasn't aware that a 260 had breathers in the valve covers.

I'm pretty sure you have a 221 or 260 , so maybe the breathers in the valve covers could help you with a quick I.D.

us 221 cats gotta stick together either they think its a 6 cylinder or think we have no idea wat were talking about the only reason my 221 is still in my 63 is because of the coversation starter it is.

that and because they only made it for 2 years
