I got these little hangers from Speedway. I think they’re pretty slick.

314887D6-CC5F-4D0D-8276-27116DC4DB73.jpeg It's nice when you have a buddy that can fix your stupid mistakes. My pal Jake TIG'd the errant holes I'd managed to lay out wrong (hey, I got one right) on the never used Wilson Welding backing plate for the 8" Ford rear under the roadster. Now, my dilemma: Blast these and polish the edges? Polish the whole plate, or paint them and polish the edges? Then, what to do with the Buick drums? I have one of 4 of the backing plates which is polished, and it's BEAUTIFUL, but I don't want to polish the other 3. Maybe just the other front one? Deicions, decisions...

Maybe I should call this, "Hemi Under Glass"? I'm excited to get the car up wheels now that I've got all the suspension stuff and brakes ready to finally assemble.

  4. I just want to say, that wrapping my head around one full build at a time along with normal life tasks and chores, daily driver maintenance etc. is about all I can handle at any given time. To watch you going with 2 full builds simultaneously...and making fast progress on each, well, you have my respect.

Haha, thanks! I’ve gotta get our trailer out soon(‘47 Spartan Manor) and get it ready, the Diamond T needs some attention this spring, and we have landscaping to do. I gotta get these cars done. Not to mention the T’bird...

I thought so, too but they don't hold up. Pretty soon, you have metal to metal and no noise and vibration insulation. I had to change them out on my Plymouth. YMMV.

The little insulators failed? I wondered about the longevity. Of course I chose them as opposed to the rubber strap kind that clamp on with a regular muffler clamp because they looked a little cleaner. I'll rethink these, and figure a way to do the strap kind.

I'm pretty sure @Blue One had problems with those too and in his thread he found a solution to the problem.

My first thought was some bronze bushings from the hardware store...

  11. We never had an issue with those hangers. Used them on a dozen cars or so.

I retrofitted back to the rubber straps. The polymer inserts literally cold flowed and distorted to the point that all you had was metal on metal. When I went over a bump, the exhaust pipe would make a "clunk" sound. That was my experience.

I used similar, modern hangers like that for the exhaust I built for the DeSoto, but I really want to keep these very simple ones under the roadster. I think I'll see how they work, perhaps a fender washer on rather than a standard washer against the insulator will help longevity. Honestly, it's not like this car is going to get 10,000 miles a year on it, so for now I'll keep 'em.

Much better! It reinforces my observation that this is a direct copy of the Lokar product, and certainly fits the look I'm going for (cheesy, but refined) for this little car.

Well, the exhaust tips ended up coming through the rear pan just like I wanted .

  19. Think about scalloping the pan cutout around the tips?

That’s the plan. A little “bead” of ‘glass filler will turn that trick.

Those insulators work best and will last if used horizontally.

The guy doing the upholstery came down the other to put the headliner in the DeSoto wagon (long story, but that's for another thread, on another day), looked at the roadster and said, "You haven't got much done on that have ya?"
Seriously? I guess all I've done in the past two months is finish the bodywork on the DeSoto, paint it, polish it, get (most of) the trim back on, spend a week in Florida, a week in New Orleans, then another trip to Florida, and get wheels and tires on it, and ready for him to get the upholstery in, which he hasn't finished either.
Nevertheless, I felt sort of like a slacker, so this morning I mocked up the car and have it setting on the suspension, which makes it LOOK like a car and moved the boxes of parts away from it so I could see it, even though it's parts piled up it LOOKs like a car. I took a step back, and, damn, it looks REALLY good. Stance and ride height are, to me, perfect.
So now, filled with inspiration and having the roadster duct taped together, I can finish the wagon. As soon as Mr. "I'm taking 5 months to do your interior" gets his part done... F3D47DD5-1236-4547-89F6-CD5A36A39F34.jpeg 88795D4B-0145-42A5-B6BC-EB1478D7CA27.jpeg

I’m at a standstill with both projects. I managed to polish one of the front backing plates, and quickly decided the rear ones can get painted. My buddy is going to mill a flat in the rear backing plates(marked with a Sharpie) that’ll fit them with no other work to the 8” rear.
My upholstery guy has done squat on the DeSoto wagon interior, so I guess it’s time to enjoy summer and stay out of the shop.

After a long wait for an appointment at the Sec. of State I FINALLY got the roadster title transferred, AND last weekend I found a pretty nice '29 Michigan plate, so I'll send the application to register that plate to the car. It's not much, but it is a step forward.

I piled up some more roadster parts. Since it’s titled now I figured I should clean up around it too.
