I have a '51 chevy 3/4 ton I bought with a late model chevy rear That I can't identify. It was born under the '80 donor truck. It doesn't have bolts around the pinion like a 14 bolt. The pinion is very long. It doesn't have a dana 60 rear cover. What is this? It is a 3.23 open? Anyone know?
Pictures? Most all GM rearend I can think of from an 80 truck would have an inspection cover. Is it 8-lug?
Sounds like you have whats known as the - "Corporate 14", NON floating /aka/ Semi floating (as opposed to Full floating) rear end. It will have a 9.5" ring gear and while it has a 14 bolt rear cover it will only have 12 bolts on the ring gear. Has been made in both 8 and 6 lug patterns....
That semi-floater had gears as highway friendly as a 3.08; I had a van with a 3.23 in it for a while. Usually they're more like a 3.73 though.
