Looks a bit like the HWM "Stovebolt Special".

The "Stovebolt Special" at Pebble Beach. The car was built in the UK with an Alta engine. It was used in the movie "The Racers" with Kirk Douglas. It was fitted with a SBC and raced on the West Coast for years. It's now back in the UK.

The guy that owns it writes for the uk rag "Classic and Sportscar". thre is almost aways a bit on it.

It was built by Stirling Moss's mechanic (whose name escapes me). it has a great plaque on the dash that says "built in the woods by squirrels".

    It is SBC powered.

Anybody have a good guess as to what size tires are in that picture?

    Not the HWM-Stovebolt.

It is the Meyer Special. Cadillac/Pontiac-powered. Ran in early SCCA races on the East Coast.

This is a photo of it in an earlier configuration at an ice race in Franconia Notch, NH.

Oh, and Stirling's mechanic's name was Alf Francis.

Cris, thanks for the post and pic which I think definitively solves the mystery. Leave it to us yanks to race on ice. Does the car still exist?Cheers, Miller91

The car was continually modified over the years and was completely unrecognizable from the original in its final configuration. I have heard that it does and does not still exist, though for some reason I seem to recall actually having seen it at one point. I just searched some photos of mine and couldn't find it.

The final version looked much like an oversized home-built Maserati Tipo 61.
