Hi Gary the chop was 3 3/4. Reason for the odd number was to fit a set of precut glass I bought at a swap meet.
Well finally made some progress on the coupe. After a 18 week wait lotsa lies and a pretty crappy job I finally got my chrome plate stuff back. Turns out it is nickel not chrome but I just want to get my build moving again. Chassis is all done. I'm going to have it aligned before I put my motor and trans in so it will be in the ballpark after its assembled. I have to have my tunnel ram milled. It doesn't seat right with the new heads other than that it should be ready to fire in the next couple weeks. Then onto body work ugh hate that part. Posted from the TJJ App for iPhone & iPad
Couple update pics. Anyone know if I can get a video to load direct from the iPhone app or if I have to load it to YouTube first?
Thanks One more pic I forgot to add. I cut my roof insert back out. It was too flat and I hated the shape of it. I'd recommend against anyone considering the Howells insert. Not nearly enough crown for my tastes. Story of my life I have to do everything twice! I am planning on leaving it open for now and building wood bows. I added steel to reinforce everything so an original wood kit is out.
Love this build. Taking notes for my own model a project, which is running and on the road, but needs a lot more love.
Took a look at my build thread an realized I didn't have any pics of the completed chassis and added a couple more of my deck lid from my other thread. It is running now but I can't for the life of me figure how to upload videos. Posted from the TJJ App for iPhone & iPad
So after cutting the Howells insert back out I had already trimmed the tack strip off and reinforced the inside with steel and sold all the wood brackets. So that kind of killed the idea of installing an original wood kit. The easy way would have been to use some steel and make bows but it really wouldn't look right in my mind, so I welded the lip to the reinforcement steel and set about making up some wood. Wood is not my strong point and I don't own many woodworking tools. What you see was done with a circular saw, a DA., a drill press. some files, and a belt sander. It bolts to the steel I added. And should support the canvas I plan on running just fine. Best part is I have $11 bucks invested so far. (the wood was free from a friend). I'm pretty proud of what I have so far, unfortunately like half the stuff I do I just kind of winged it and didn't take any in progress pics cause I didn't think it would turn out good enough. I'll update when I get it all finished. Posted from the TJJ App for iPhone & iPad
GO with Bobby Waldens inserts IMO the best out there from what i seen. Or get a old mustang roof etc. Looks good
That's what I have heard Dave. Maybe on the next one. I'm going to make some type of removable insert on this one.
Hey skater just read your whole build thread. Don't know how I missed it. Love it I'll be keeping an eye on it!
Nice project ! Good ideas here Model A closed car snap top canvas roofs lets see em! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=746531
What a great build! glad to see your still progressing on it, any chance you might have the time to put up the home made dimple die plans? That would be great! Keep up the good work! Ken.
Hey ken it's not very detailed and I really don't remember where the bearings http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=321112 Here's another one I did you might like. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=753841 Thanks Tim
Little progress update. Got the wood almost all done very happy with the results. Posted from the TJJ App for iPhone & iPad
Thanks for the compliments guys. Little update. I built a framework to flip the body over to finish the underside. I tried laying on my back but was burning the crap out of myself welding and it just wasn't going well. I finished all the metalwork and seam sealed the bottom. I'm going to use bed liner on the bottom. As soon as I'm done flip it over and I'll be onto bodywork. Posted from the TJJ App for iPhone & iPad
Well it's been along time since an update. The cars body saw its first sunlight in almost 5 years. I wheeled it outside to blow it out and wash it. It is officially ready for paint. I have the week off so I should have it painted and on the frame by weeks end if everything goes well. If it all works out I'll have a pic of the car together out in the sun soon. Looks great!!! Hoping to finish the channeling on mine this weekend. I may have to build a contraption like yours to turn the body so I can weld the bottom (I don't like welding over my head either).
