Lol, okay that's good to know. I'm gonna use a 34 axle and split bones, A spring with reversed eyes and 1 leaf removed. Hopefully it will look as good as yours!
did that years ago, had a model A main leaf made 1 15/16" longer with reversed eye at Portland spring co.
I have a '35 axle with '32 spindles, reversed eye Model A spring with 2 leaf's removed. 6.00X16's on front. Here's what it look's like...
Mine has 5.50x16 front and 6.50x16 rear. My '31 "B" Banger Coupe has 225/75/16 rear and 205/70/16 front on '35 Ford wires with reversed eye front main leaf and stock rear. Stock Model A axles with '40 hyd brakes. Front and rear both need a leaf or two taken out. Dave
1stGrumpy.....where do you think I got the idea from!!?? hahahahaha The only difference is I have 48 Ford spindles and the tires are 6.7x15s.
I finally found another turn signal lens for the BLC 904a headlights on this car! It is chipped and crusty pretty much like the one the car already had so a good match. These lenses were held in with a small spring that wrapped around the base of the lens but those are missing so I went looking for a solution. I thought a nice fat rubber o-ring might work so off to Ace Hardware to find some. No luck. All that were thick enough were too big around. Back to the truck to decide where to try next when I had an epiphany ! I had recently bought a bag of garden hose gaskets and I prefer the o-ring type vs the flat washers and it just so happened I still had them in the truck. Dug them out and shoved one on the lens. PERFECT! They are now installed back in the headlights and the rubber o-ring seals them to the housing as a bonus. Didn't think to take pics installing them but I did find a cool thing while in there. Remember Gordon's friend Ben Rodriguez that owned the car for awhile before trading it back to Gordon, the original builder? He had the headlights chromed and I just found "Ben R." written inside both lights! Dave
Well, it's almost time to leave for Bonneville! The '29 AV8 is getting hauled there in the morning for it's 1st visit to the salt. Yeah, I'm hauling it, gotta have something to camp in, besides, I'm getting old! The '29 will be our driver while there. Here is my hauler setup. Look for me and the '29 at Bonneville and Wendover. Dave
Just make sure you clean the truck and trailer really well after the trip to Bonneville...and if you are taking it out on the salt the Model A is going to need a major strip down and clean. I have had brake springs and parts rust away brake lines and fuel lines suddenly spring leaks , starter motors, generators and alternators and other electrics corrode and die (internally) and aluminum parts dull and pit months later. Even after extensive hot power wash cleaning and scrubbing on the hoist at the Truckstop , I have found salt packed into corners and crevices thousands of miles later. . Now I always buy a "disposable " Chevy pickup truck when I go to Bonneville. I wreck it afterwards, selling the parts back here in NZ easily pays it's way.
Good advice to all, 97. This is my 5th different car I've taken to the salt. I will also be more conservative with this one as to my behavior on the salt, no screwing around! I do have a lift at home so I can pressure wash it and I use the car wash in Wendover a couple times too before I leave town. Another cup of coffee and a bowl of cereal and it will be time to head out! Dave
I bought a '55 CJ5 this January that has one of those filter canisters. I've never seen one of them before. Now i know what it is, because mine looks exactly like that one
Made it to Bonneville Speedweek 2018! Took the '29 AV8 this year. Here are some pics from there. Car ran great except for a few times it boiled the carb over which floods it and makes it not start until it cools off a bit. Wish I would have put the phenolic spacer under the carb BEFORE I went! It was plenty hot there this year. Four bucks at the car wash got all the salt off easily. I kept the speed down when driving on the salt and the fenders did their job well. A quick inspection on my lift verified it. Dave
Damn that thing just looks like it is right at home on the salt! Salt looks awesome, nowhere near as wet and sticky as in recent years. Shoulda woulda coulda , been there myself.
No, it is on the back burner for now except for driving it now and then. I am back to working on my '33 Plymouth Coupe that got postponed when I bought the '29 Sedan. https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/updates-on-my-33-plymouth-pd-coupe-build.1016430/ Dave
Haven't done or changed much on the AV8 recently but a year ago I put Moon discs on it because that is what the original builder ran on it. I put them on for his wife's memorial service and left them on since then. I was not crazy about them. They had to be removed to mess with tire pressure and never felt very secure. Today I drove it to physical therapy partly because my therapist has a chopped '29 sedan he has had under construction for a couple hundred years (listening Mitch!?) and I wanted to rub it in a little. I pressed on all 4 caps to be sure they were tight. After my appointment he came outside with me and I said I gotta check the discs again just to be sure so I don't lose one. When I got to the right rear it was gone! I pulled the rest of them off and headed home watching for the missing 1. Pulled in my driveway, got out and crossed the hwy and walked a 100 feet and there it was. Popped off on the rumble strip in the center of the road. Well, I cured it! Here's a couple pics. Whatcha think? I don't believe I even have any pics of it with the Moons and I'm not putting them back on to get some. I ran it for a long time with no caps. These '40 Standards are off my '40. Will have to buy some more. Dave
I think it looks awesome. Those seats look stock (but reupholstered). Are they comfortable enough for medium-length trips? What are you doing for an emergency brake? Thanks, Gary
The seat is stock '29 buckets that Gordon welded together to make a bench. I hate to say it but I always hated '28-9 Tudor seats and while the bench is certainly better, I would not call it comfortable!. Parking brake is a '40 handle under the left side of the dash, very close to the clutch pedal. Not a ton of room for anything non stock in these early cars! Dave
I finally am getting around to installing the hood on this. Got it mostly bolted on but still have to attach the latch mechanism Gordon had on it. I cleaned the latch stuff up and squirted some black on it. Need to get a new pull cable for it that runs inside to the dash. Then the latch can go on. Here are some pics today. Dave
