Moved connectors for number 3 & 4 flex pipe forward, and then first cut 2” off each piece of flex pipe. This brought the collector closer to the vehicle and will be about 3” away from the outside of the frame. Still had issues with flex pipe lengths, so made some a bit longer and some shorter. Amazing how one length affects the others. All is good now, except I’ll need to make number 2 a bit longer by about an inch after cutting off 3/4”. Lol!

I love making custom headers/exhaust. Best way to make your car unique. Nice work.

    Cool ideas.
I would love to see a video of that engine running.
    Curious to hear the sound.

Thanks guys. Me too. Going to wait till spring so I can fire it up outdoors when snow is gone. I want to test different configurations of the exhaust to see what changes they have on the sound. Both centre pipes open, one centre pipe closed then switch. I’m also curious as to the effect the huge collector will have on the sound, as I see it amplifying it quite a bit. Was thinking of trying both a flat section and an inverted cone to close off the front opening of the collector. Not that the aim is performance orientated, but coming out straight from the exhaust ports with gently curving bends is best for flow, but that is common sense. Apparently, the first 90 degree bend out of ths header is a perfornance killer. Haha, we’ll see.

Look closely at the exhaust passages in the block, the restriction in flow is there and there isn't much you can do about it. A cone with the pointed end forward will look great and leave all of the pipes open. The longer and larger the pipe is, generally the deeper the tone and resonance.

Yeh, I was recently looking at some old threads with actual cut-aways of the block and heads. Exhaust flow passages are brutally restrictive and with all the internal bends it definitely wasn’t designed with performance in mind. My greatest worry is accidently eliminating the classic V8 flathead sound. Kinda reminds me of the awesome sound of the boxer in my 05 Suburu Legacy GT wagon. Loved that car with the 5sp manual.

Run all of your pipes into the large collector, you won't regret it. Our first drag racer was a '53 ford gasser with six two foot long pipes hanging out the bottom. Still remember the sound of that flattie at full song. True music.

Nice. Best exhaust sound I ever heard was a 383 powered Road Runner (open headers at the drag). Still remember the ground shaking as well as my organs as it drove by. I’m still a fan of Mopar muscle. Lol!

My Isky sticker and pulley arrived yesterday. Can’t say I’ve had any issues with things being delayed by USPS.

Tach arrived today. Looks brand new to me. Haha! Winter wonderland here. Going back down to -19C tonight.

Finally got around to doing a simple layout for the exhaust tip/exit. A 45 degree angle exit with a 22.5 degree transition puece looked a little too abrupt, so I changed it to 40 degrees with a 15 degree tranisition angle. Oval opening will be 5.75” lg without squishing it in my press. Will first try without squishing it. Won’t be exactly like it is on the GN JAP, but maybe close enough. Lol!
Now to figure out how to cut the pipe on these angles. Would be too easy to use my mitre saw with a crappy old blade. Hmmm...

Just a quick update. Been sidetracked with other stuff, but never heard back Technoversions regarding their product for tachometers (link to that thread below). They have no number to reach them either.
Picked up a Diablo Steel Demon blade for my mitresaw to cut up my exhaust collectors, but hoping I can use it for lots of other things. I’ve been impressed with the blade I got years ago for my skill saw. Works great but the steel chips go everywhere.
Damn it was -22C this morning, but this week we are looking at highs of around 0C.

do we know what the "GN" designation represents?

found this watching the other video referenced, so maybe it's something genetic i'm missing:

Yep. Gotta love the Thunderbug. JAP = J.A. Prestwich. Maker of the 5.0L V8 aircooled engine in Richard’s creation.

My “other” project. A gift for a neighbour. A wooden block mosaic coat rack made from skids.

Speaking of cycle cars, this neat vid showed up in my YT feed this morning. I’m guessing Richard drew some inspiration from it for his build.

Managed to do a bit of mockup with the exhaust before it got dark out (cutting outside to avoid too much saw dust in the shop). Used my mitresaw for two days straight, then destroyed the guard while cutting off a “stub” left on a piece of firewood. While assessing the damage and looking over the specs on the Diablo blade, I noticed that max rpm is 1,800, and on my wood blade it says 5,000 rpm. So instead of using it on my mitresaw, I installed it on my abrasive disc chop saw (3,500 max rpm). Before doing that, I tried the 45 degree cut using the abrasive disc that came with the chop saw. It was brutally slow cutting through the tube wall in the beginning and in the end. Switching to the Diablo blade, it sliced through it like butter in seconds. Of course, I made the 80 degree cut in the wrong direction, but still decided to go ahead with the mock up as a proof of concept. Turned out not too bad. Lol!

No progress to report other than finding a vintage vacuum gauge on eBay. Really surprised at what folks are asking for vintage vacuum gauges. Got it for US$50.00. Sorry, but forgot to snap a pic. Should be back at working on my project this weekend.

Unfortunately, I didn’t get a chance to do any work. Vacuum gauge is shipping out today from US.

The vacuum gauge arrived two days ago, so I decided to give it a little test today. Works surprisingly well! Can’t pull anything much above 26-28 in Hg though, but gauge seems to hold the vaccum. Haha! Like it!

Sorry, but no progress to report as I've been busy with my other "project" - a 79 IH Traveler. Pulled the boat anchor 345 motor last week, and I'm about to mount the body tub on my rotisserie. Once I get it mounted this week (I hope), I'll start again on the speedster.

Had a couple of those 13 letter trucks. The engines may be heavy but they will run forever and if you can get traction they'll pull down a giant sequoia. Torque monsters.

Don’t like cross-posting too much, but I finally was able with my eldest daughter’s help to get my IH Traveler mounted on my rotisserie. Waaaay more work than I had ever expected. Just need to clean up the mess in my garage and get the beast in so I can get back at the flathead. We’ve had absolutely gorgeous weather the last week here with a high of 24C yesterday so I had to take advantage of it.

This just in... actually I don't know much about this kit. I've only just started to see press releases for it. 1/35 is kinda small for a model car kit for me, but I think I'm going to get one!
