Wow, cool story! Sounds like a lot of work but what a great testimony for motivation! Great job and looking forward to this build.

Thats an awesome story. It would have gone the opposite way for me.

I would have started out with a 51 Chevy and wound up with a Tonka.

Great story and build! An earlier post pictured several Buicks as regards the side trim. One of those was Bill Mitchell's 1956X Buick Century convertible. If anyone is interested, that car is currently being restored. You can access the website by Googling 1956X Century. This restoration is being done by a group of guys who restored a GM Futurliner a few years ago.

The car made it to fill primer yesterday! We're very happy with it too, looks like we will be able to block it out once and paint it. Pics are from a tiny spray booth so they're not the best but at least you can see the project is still moving along nicely.

Great story and thanks for the inspiration.
Hope to sell off some of my "junk" to fund my car too.

Haven't updated this in a while, but we haven't been slacking off, the car is really starting to look like the Photoshop now. Reassembly has begun. Progress is kinda slow considering we don't get that much time together to work on it, and probably half of our time gets devoted to generating the money it takes to do everything. But we're still doing good on our $1 budget and it's getting exciting now to see it come together.

    Any progress is good progress.

    Even a turtle gets where he's going . . . eventually. ;)

  12. Good job, the new paint looks like a winner. I think it's great that you are bartering and reselling to get up to this point, and the real investment is labor. Proof that it does not take a huge bankroll.

I never bother posting to say, "good job" or "neat-o", but this is rad. You sure are a lucky guy.

    Thanks everyone.

Arnie, we're still on the $1, haven't spent a dime outside of the budget yet and we should be able to finish it that way.

Eli, we love the photoshop version and we're shooting to get it as close to that as possible.

It'd be lower already but standard sized blocks don't fit in the rear, we have to cut some down in width to fit. The Buick trim is on the sides now and looks just like the picture, we didn't get any new pics of it but we'll post some soon.

We're going shopping at Iola tomorrow but not much we need to get it going anymore except time.

The car is coming together nicely, hoping to have it on the road in the next couple of weeks. These pics are really poorly lit and the car is dusty but in person it's really looking nice. 3" blocks in the rear and 14" tires gives it a nice rear-sloping rake and is low enough without going too far, this is how it will sit. Still gotta get the rest of the glass in and tie up some loose ends but we're really close now.

I have to mirror everyone else, what a fantastic project! The paint selection looks awesome, it is turning out to be one very nice car.
You have to do something to secure this woman permanently, you are one lucky guy!!

With such a nice looking car AND the story behind it, I bet you could get it featured in a major car magazine

We busted out a few grueling weekends on the car and got it together for the Symco Shakedown. We were so busy with the swap meet that we never grabbed a picture of it, but a friend of mine snapped this one. It's covered in dust from the weekend in this pic, the paint isn't actually as flat as it appears. The interior still needs to be done, but the outside is all back together and the car runs and drives. We drove it around town last weekend but we ended up hauling it to the show for a couple reasons, one was that the car was untested and the other being I had to have my truck and trailer to haul swap meet stuff with anyway.

We will work out some of the bugs this fall and finish out the interior over the winter, but for now, the car is together, registered, insured, and on the road.
