Man that's a bummer!

I am curious as to why you need to putt at 55 though. According to Chevrolet, the 54 With a 235 had a top speed of 86 MPH and should be able to cruise at 65-70 all day long. Again, according to Chevrolet at 65 MPH it will be turning 2996 RPM and peak power was made at 3700 RPM and it will safely turn 4200 RPM.

An accident yes, after all the talk on mirrors and all someone should have mentioned a shoulder check before swinging back towards the right lane.

Sounds like you just assumed the lane would be empty after the jerk passed and didn't bother to look.

A rookie driver style mistake. Always shoulder check.

Ok, let me give the full story. The road was opening up from two to four lanes. The caddy passed me on the right, i moved to the left, meanwhile the lanes are now opening so there are cars on my left (because they are passing correctly), so i immediately move back over to the right to not hit the cars on the left. This is when i hit my dad. It was my fault, i should have looked over my shoulder. But i was preventing one (or multiple wrecks on my left, then went to the right to avoid this and hit my dad. Sucks all the way around but shit happens. I have learned from my mistakes, believe me. I just felt i would take my chances to the right instead of wrecking everyone to the left. The stupid bastard in the caddy was at fault. I would have keep my position on the road hadn't he did what he did.

A cop would probably tell you it's your fault for not looking. Not sure I understand why your dad would try to pass you at that point. But at least the damage is minor and nobody got hurt.

Years ago I had an asshole pass me on the left shoulder on a highway offramp, and he got nervous where the guardrail started and came over and just clipped me. Cops show up and this prick and the bitch in the car tell them I came out and cut them off, even though he came zooming up from behind me to pass me. So I got the blame even though you could tell by the marks on the car he came from behind me.

On the bright side, the insurance company decided there was prior damage and awarded him a whopping $12.

I agree. I'm not sure why my dad was there and neither is he. It was very fast (30 seconds) and i guess i lifted off the gas which made him catch up to me. He was trying to get out of the way but it just happened too fast.

Was that 86 mph with a powerglide? Mine sounds like its going to explode if i get it up around 55. But i am running a three speed........

Doesn't matter - they both have a 1;1 top gear. I think part of the problem is we have become so acclimated to new cars that are A) Quiet, both inside and the motors, and B) gear ratio's with overdrive have made us used to 1700 RPM at 70 MPH so that the old stuff just doesn't sound right.

In the old days, it was not uncommon to kind of have something just under a 2 for 1 RPM to MPH ratio. In other words 3,000 RPM was a bit over 60-65, 3500 was a little over 70 etc.

My car will only run about 55 mph (stock drive train). There was an idiot behind my dad in a POS caddy that decided that it would be smart to pass us both on the right side in the pull off lane.

If you're holding up traffic it's gonna piss someone off. Pull over and let them through. "Slower traffic keep right" doesn't mean only when you feel like it. It's an easy way to avoid confrontations like this. No BS about what's legal as 99.9% of us don't obey the traffic laws any more than the Caddy driving idiot. Anyone besides me find it odd that the "idiot" is the only one who didn't end up with damage to his car?

Them old Chevy six's have a certain sound and harmonics at speed, you'll hear it and feel it when it happens. Don't be afraid to find it. When you do find that sweet spot, you'll find that it runs better, and gets better gas mileage than at 55.

Yep...I really wonder if the people that put T5's in really get better gas milage at 70-75 mph with a stock engine as in OP's car ..If I want to drive my cars somewhere and only want to do a certain speed then I will choose roads that will let me, usually takes way longer but if you enjoy the ride, take the scenic route, so to speak....

LOL, you got that exactly right!! We use to drive my friends 57 Chevy ½ ton stepside w/235 & 3 speed all over the place and it would hit, what we would call "plane speed" at about 65-70. It would hum along all day at "plane speed" nice and smooth, no problem.
