I put the truck back outside today and made paper templates of the piece from the end of the rear fenders to the tailgate. I finaly made one I like so now I have a good pattern to go off of. I also figured out the length and diameter of the round tube bumper while I was out there. I figured out a way to make the bumper tie in the stake pockets too, I don't know why I didn't think of that earlier. It was something simple that just looks right when applied.
I made those rear pieces this afternoon, hammer and dolly on these around the edge and broke the tops over angle iron again. I think it finishes off the back side neatly. the soft edge gives it more a finished look, at least it does for me...lol
Here's what I decided about that rear bumper, I wanted it look a bit gasserish with round tube. I decided that a 3 inch tube would look the best but didn't like the way it left the stake pockets hanging out in the breeze. So while staring at it yesterday it dawns on me to try a bologny cut on the end. I had the pieces I cut off the exhaust, I never seem to toss this kind of stuff, so I duct taped them on. Holly cow if it didn't make those stake pockets flow into the width of the tailgate ! and a further away shot to see both sides at once I'm almost done fabricating pieces for this thing !
I don't know about that but I do know I put off doing it, now that it's done it was pretty easy...lol Guess what I'm saying is throw caution to the wind and get at it. I can't really afford to pay people to do this stuff for me and I enjoy doing it.
I don't know what you call that thing, it's some kind of roller to act as a third hand while using a table saw I think. I bought a drill press off of a guy and he threw that in on the deal. It held the sheet metal on one side then I used a 2 X 4 behind the other side of the metal and bent it up and around the roller. I'm sure everyone understood how that one worked though....lol
I was planning on building my 41 stock, but now, after seeing yours, I dont know, hmmmm, maybe I'll build 2, I have enough pieces for a stock truck and a hot rod, thanks for the inspiration!
I was asked about the chop on the truck and let me say first and formost this was my one and only chop and I had no idea what I was doing. Those of you that know me will get a kick out of one of these pictures. Yes that is me with hair, a mullet no less, and yes it was something other than gray...lol I took 4 inches out of the roof and 2 through and under the rear window. Here's the tape lay out, these are from around 1994 I think. Here's that funny picture...lol Hey lets hack the roof off, why not. At this point I wasn't to sure if this was such a good move, I was scratching my head to figure out how to make this thing fit back together. I had no guidence so I just chopped things apart and tried to put it back together. Here looking at the weld lines you can see what all I did, probably could of got away with half the cuts looking at it now. It was back together and I was happy it made there. The chop did stand up to the garage cave in pretty well to my amazement.
No, never got that goofy cross the border permit. Hey, I still pull cougars when I sport one of those...lol
I took time out from the Henry J and made the rear bumper, didn't fill it with concrete...lol It's a little thicker than 1/8 inch with 1/4 inch brackets back to the frame.
Thanks man, coming from a guy with some cool as cars, that's saying something. I can't wait to get this on the road, next year should be good !
Between the normal stuff, my 6 year old and I being sick etc. etc. I found time to cap off the ends with 1/8 in. plate. Another piece finished and closer to paint.
Thanks Andy, it's time to get busy on the paint situation and figure out what I'm doing or can afford. In the meantime I swapped intakes for a dual quad air gap, I like it !
I've let the ol truck fall on the way side while working on the new car (henry j). But...... I went and did it, I committed un-suicide ! I had enough screwing around with these suicide doors and all their problems. I cut out the smooth I gave it 17 years ago and put the lumps back on and the doors open and close great. I still need to move the strikers n latches back on the back side but did I say the doors work great now....ha ha I still can't find the upper hinge for the drivers side so I only did the one door so far.
Awesome build Swade... Being in the same situation, I always have respect for someone who can do such a tidy job with a minimum of tools and basic equipment. I know it isn't easy...but you make it look like it is!
Thanks to Novadude55 for sending me an upper hinge, I was able to switch the drivers side. Funny how I used a westcoast hinge on the west side of the truck, now I can say it's got a little Cali. in it. ha ha ha
No excuses now,, git err done,, WoW, not only that they got from Ca to Ny, You already got em on the truck.. I sent those out Sat around noon. amazing Good Job
Well I know I'm really slow with this truck but I did do a little to it recently. I started getting all the bondo off the roof so I can see what I have to work with. The bondo goes right with that "bondo abuse" thread with it being 1/2 inch thick in places.
