I did not cross drill my crank, but I wish that I had... I didn't plan to run it that hard, just wanted a cruiser at the time. Now that I'm driving it all the time, it's hard not to run it up to 4k now and then... it sounds killer.

I run my 230 with OD 70-75 mph all day long, it turns about 2500 rpms at 70mph(gps), 2800 at 75mpg. Drove the car 3300 miles in June to Tulsa and back to Idaho and it didn't miss a beat.

Hi! I'm in the same boat as you it sounds. I have a '51 dodge wayfarer and am in the process of collecting all the parts. I bought an aluminum head, a 2x2 intake and aluminum side valve covers all from edgy. He'll also reground your cam. Dual exhaust from red's headers were the cheapest. A jeep Cherokee rear end '90(?)-'02 fits the width and you can get disc brakes in the back. ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1395881326.001193.jpg

So I'm guessing you're looking for a newer rear with higher gears? Some guys use A body 8 3/4's, some will tell you to find an 8.8 out of an Explorer, but if you're still running the stock motor, you could end up underpowered with higher gears.

    Hello everyone.
I have a 1950 dodge 1 ton. I'm looking at making it more of a daily driver

I want to put a better trans on it. One I don't have to double clutch and go faster with. Not much faster just 80kph without struggling.

I see many put on a t5. Can you be more specific as to what year of t5 it is and beginner question but is it a t5 Borg?
And can you put on a link to where I would find everything i need for conversion. Will I need a custom trans bracket for it? Or is there an after market one.

    Thanks

Guys - be careful if swapping heads - the head gasket is different between a 218 and a 230 - there is a difference in the 230 and while the heads will swap over there is a change in the water passages. The 230 has a 'bump" in it which accommodates the additional cooling. The 230 is a great start to a good hard pulling torque engine. I remember in the early 80's being lazy at the traffic lights and pulling away cleanly in 2nd gear and changing to top before 25 miles per hour - sure it wasn't up hill but never the less the ol girl didn't complain as we weren't looking to drag race.

On the question of how high you can rev a stock Mopar flathead six .....

Here is an interesting article on a one owner, 1951 DeSoto 8 passenger sedan. If the stock flathead six can make it in this 6000 pound whale (towing a trailer) it can handle your car.

    http://www.allpar.com/cars/desoto/suburban-1951.html

Notice the part where he says at high altitude, at 70MPH it smooths out like a perfectly balanced turbine. This is with a 4 3/4" stroke, no overdrive, and 4:11 gears. At 10,000 feet altitude. Pulling a trailer.

He says he avoids running over 3600RPM in the interest of long engine life but continuous full throttle 3200RPM on long grades is no problem.

You might want to visit the www.p15-d24.com forum. Your's is a fairly common question over there.
You will also find info on my website that may help.

Today, I crossed the boarder crossing at the Blue Water bridge at Port Huron, Mi, at 8:15 AM. 188 miles later I cleared the US boarder in Niagara Falls at 12:15 Pm. I believe this is an average of 56 mph, which included a pit stop in Woodstock On, a 15 minute back up on theQew, a gas stop avec toilete in Hamilton, and 15 minutes in line at the boarder. I did this in my 230 powered 46 on 9.9 gallons of gas, with a 4.11 rear end. The on line calculators with my tires and rear gears says 65mph is 3325 rpms. Been doing this with this set up for 10 years and 30 k miles. 45 psi oil pressure and 170 on the temp gauge. 56 230, +.030, .050 off the head, dual stock carters, single exhaust, stock cam and ignition. Mustang chassis dyno says 127 rear wheel HP at 3280.

I found a Edmunds head on the front seat of a Corvair in a junkyard three years ago, and am in the process of restoring it... all that's left to make it look NOS is a skim cut off the deck and t-stat housing surface.
Is it stupid to want to build a complete hot rod around an aluminum head?!:D

Not at all, considering the head will probably be the rarest and most expensive part on the car.
