Mine has just enough gas to get me home, kinda like a reserve tank.

Delmar (200 x 140).jpg We ran duel Moon tank up front, one for fuel and the other had water circulated
through a stock chevy fuel pump. Helped keep the motor cool and added a little weight up front.

Hello, (not to put a damper on the festivities here with those cool photos, but...)

Our experience with Moon Tanks is not a pleasant one. But a good thing for all future racers/hot rodders was put into place after our fiasco. I can tell you when the safety tech committee at Lions Dragstrip banned the use of all Moon Tanks inside of the cab. It was two weeks from August 13, 1960. We had our clutch explode in our 671 SBC 40 Willys in the finals of our C/Gas race and completely destroy the legal scattershield. A piece or pieces of the metal flew into the Moon Tank. The result was a massive fire that completed gutted the interior.

My brother tried to put out the fire with the on board extinguisher, but was overcome, so he jumped out going about 60 mph after the traps. (the racers on the return road witnessed the explosion, fire, and fast exit) He received 3rd degree burns over 30% of his arm, leg, face and body. The helmet saved most of his head.

The next day after the explosion/fire, Atts Ono and I went back to Lions to salvage what was left. The car was still wedged into the chain link fence. The scary thing was that inside was totally burned out, but we saw many pieces of metal chunks wedged into the dash, door sills, the glove box, and all that remained were a few melted bolts on the floor where the Moon Tank should have been. There was a huge hole where that scattershield flew out along with those clutch pieces.

Atts Ono was in the building stage of his 40 Willys and immediately moved the Moon Tank in front of his motor. So, a bad thing happened in 1960, but a good thing warned all future racers to be safe.

    Thanks,

    Jnaki

  16. I'm surprised this thread is still going. Here's a better shot of the tank on my Dragmaster.
