Projects Model T Speedster....... my take on it

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by ottoparts, May 25, 2018.

  1. Made a new dowel pin for the camshaft. This new pin is offset. This should now run the cam 7 degrees advanced over stock. Threw the cam in for gear mesh inspection.

  2. Tonight we straighten out the pan on a pan jig. Wasn't to badly out of shape. A couple of wacks here and there, then the pan fell onto the jig like butter. 20180713_173351.jpeg 20180713_173630.jpeg 20180713_173901.jpeg

  3. Works been sending me all over the place as of late. Makes it a bit hard for forward progress when you are in a different state. Either way, got the valves installed along with the adjustable lifters. Set at thirty thousands. Then we balanced the rods. The pistons were so close to each other that I didn't mess with them. Installed them on rods and waiting for me to come home. 20180715_162336.jpeg 20180715_102303.jpeg 20180715_142017.jpeg 20180715_162033.jpeg

I'm thoroughly engrossed by this build! NEVER heard of that Watford auxiliary tranny. So far today I've learned about fifties Pontiac V8's, the Silhouette and it's sad story; and Model T's.....

  6. Home for a bit and time for some T work. Noticed that I forgot to install the oil tube. Off yet again came the flywheel. I installed a later style oil tube with the large mouth oil catch. Flywheel back on for good......... again. Started with number one rod and started the fitting procedure. Some dykem ink on the babbit, tighten some, wiggle, remove, look for shiny marks, scrape to fit, repeat until I had even marks across the entire babbit. Did this for all four rods.

  7. Next it was time for the aluminum head fitment. The first head was a repop of an early T "low head". Put some modeling clay on the pistons, head on, rotate assembly a few times, remove head, and......... Wow. Half inch of space. Looked at head and there was not enough material to remove before getting into the center water jacket.
Head number two, I believe this to be a Sherman. Repeat steps for this head. After removal, clay is now ninety thousandths +/- across the board. Much better. Need to get some new head bolts as I don't like how little is captured in the block. Not a bad days work.

That's what I was thinking, that head is a monster! Must take some long studs to mount. Very much looking forward to seeing what's in store for a body on this car.

  12. A little more done. This time on the transmission. Reamed the triple gears to fit the new pins. Then mocked up the transmission drums. IMG958817.jpeg IMG958818.jpeg IMG958820.jpeg IMG958821.jpeg

Just found this thread. Really diggin' what you're doing.

  14. Put the clutch discs in the trans, added the clutch spring gapped at 13/16. Made a nice little tool. 20180819_121756.jpeg 20180819_120810.jpeg

  15. Measured the amount the pistons stick out above the block deck. Measured the depth of each combustion chamber on the head. Received some really wonky numbers that I don't like. Need to come up with a game plan to even these cylinders out. 20180819_133930.jpeg 20180819_130658.jpeg 20180819_133919.jpeg

  21. Combustion chambers on head have been cleaned up. Looking at possibly taking .060 off the head. Waiting on head bolts so I can measure my head gasket squish. IMG958840.jpeg IMG958841.jpeg

Having built T speedsters and T engines, I can say with certainty that YOU ARE DOING THINGS RIGHT!!!

You have made a lot of proper progress in a short time.

I can't wait to see what you do for the body......

  24. Yes, I'd say Otto knows his way around a T engine. Beautiful work.

  25. Thanks for the compliments. However I cannot take all the credit. I have good friends that have the tooling and more knowledge than me helping me.

  26. So no real headway has been made as I'm still waiting on head bolts. However there's plenty of little things to do, like clean nuts and bolts. I try to use Henry Ford metal where I can. Chased the threads with a tap and die. Put new Kevlar linings on the bands. Installed my aluminum inspection cover on the pan and took apart/cleaned up the oil level fittings. I have big feet so I added later (26/27) pedals to the hogs head. 20180825_113138.jpeg 20180826_133738.jpeg 20180826_133722.jpeg 20180822_204947.jpeg

  27. Head bolts have arrived. Head gasket squish measured. Time to remove .080 from the head. Hopefully this long weekend will provide the chance. 20180827_195129.jpeg

  28. Well, took .095 off the head leaving .030 between the be pistons and the head. Head is all on and torqued. IMG958862.jpeg IMG958863.jpeg 20180902_134744.jpeg

  29. Jumped a little bit ahead of myself. Also noticed that the head didn't what I call "steam holes" in it to match the block. Well it does now. Also did not like the wavy/uneven surface of head bolts washer rest area. So we fixed it. All 15 head bolt locations are now the same depth. Much happier now. But hey, since it's mounted to the Bridgeport why not add a provision for a thermostat. We did. 20180902_154424.jpeg 20180902_161435.jpeg 20180902_161431.jpeg 20180902_142435.jpeg IMG958858.jpeg 20180831_175122.jpeg 20180831_175142.jpeg
