Does anyone know if the rear spring I have, is correct for this axle? I will be using a Ford 9", and wanted to measure out where to place the perches on the axle tubes.
You can see, the free length of the spring (eye to eye) is 40.1875" and the Banjo perches are 49.5". That seems like a long stretch but I could be wrong. Wouldn't be my first time.

  2. A spring perches are 49-1/2" apart and it looks like an A spring to me.

Yup. It's a hell of stretch.

  5. Do you have a spring spreader? Easy to make.

Great choice of words, seeing how I'm in Tucson which feels like hell. It's so freaking hot right now. We've had 60+ days of 100 or more, so far this year. Geez

  8. Yes it is a big stretch as designed. Special tools are sold by Model A parts dealers to safely stretch the spring for installation/removal. Rear spring installation and removal can be dangerous. Use of multiple C clamps and an all thread rod are sometimes used for installation and removal to make the operation safer.

After you get your spring hangers on the 9 inch housing, pull the leaves apart and clean them lightly grind the mating surface ends. When ready to install, main leaf first, then with a few xtra hands and big C clamps start adding leaves skipping a few to get the car down some. I say all of this not knowing your talent level for avoiding injury so work safely and when the hair on the back of your neck stands up take the hint.

  10. Some scrap tubing, all thread, some nuts and it is easy peasy. Several threads on here showing how to make them.

I used 3/4" all thread and 1" pipe to make my spring spreader, just mashed the ends in the vice.

Doing it dln1939’s way worked well for me in the past and mitigated the fear factor big time. Seems to take tons of pressure off the spreader.
