I know what you mean. While it's not
    always necessarily the case, misspelling
and/or gross corruptions of English grammar
in an ad usually indicate something of the
basic intelligence of the seller to me. My
personal pet peeves are the constant use
of the words "duel" (meaning a form of
    organized, personal armed combat between
two participants) instead of "dual" (meaning
two or double) and confusing the word "loose"
(meaning 'not tight') with "lose* (meaning to
'not win' or to misplace or to get rid of
something'). I guess they don't teach spelling
beyond 2nd grade anymore at "Red Neck
    Collegiate Institute and Learnin' School
    '!! :eek::D

  2. Actually, that would be Clessie Cummins. Ol' Rudy Diesel invented the engine, Cummins made it work

Have you told the Ford Motor Company about that?

  4. RPM is not an acronym. An acronym is a pronounceable word comprised of the first letters of a phrase, such as SCUBA, NATO, SONAR, RADAR etc.

I don't know how many times I have been asked if my 72 Suburban used to be a "Hurst".
Every car with a floor shift has a Hurst shifter in it.
I hope to put off, as long as possible, taking a final ride in a hearse!

Point taken. I need to widen my FOV a bit. I've seen these engines here in the U.S. built into equipment, but no cars other than Saabs. Pity, they are wonderfully compact and seem fairly rugged.
The V6 of similar design is marginally easier to find here as U.S.-spec Capris used them for a few years.

Ditto on riding to your dirt nap in a "Hurst"
That'd really suck. LOL Even worse, the
IDIOTS who claim in their ads that their car
has - quote - "a Hurst transmission" in it,
just because it has - or even used to have
    - a 'Hurst' brand floor shifter.:eek::eek:

Or even worse than just grossly misspelling and
mispronouncing the name "Edelbrock" , how
about those amazing cars you see advertised as
having an 'Elderbrock' 'center head'"??!! A lot of
idiots call an intake manifold on a V-type engine
a "center head", implying that the seller is such a
mechanical zero, that he doesn't know the
difference between a manifold and a cylinder head
(or his ass and a hole in the ground for that matter,
too) and that he thinks his V6 or V8 engine, by
design, actually has three cylinder heads!!! I wonder
what these same morons would call a manifold for
    an inline engine????

i'd have to agree with thunderbirdesq ,i live in iowa and just bought a car from california this winter. had it on the hoist at my bro's shop after i bought it and got it home and everyone couldn't believe the Lack of rust under it.
it's not the rain that get's our cars it's the salt that they use on our roads in the winter.
no dissrespect to anyone from anystate but i'll take a car that is salt free and diet rust.
diet rust ,lack of rust, there's a few new i hate terms.
WARNING 'no one was hurt in the making of this thread and yes there is spelling errors.

  12. Mart, I see the lose/loose thing every day, everywhere, usually by people who should know better. Drives me nuts.

Not specifically auto related, but let me do my part:

    Lose- opposite of win

    Loose- opposite of tight

    Loser- opposite of winner

    Looser- opposite of tighter

    Losing - opposite of winning

    Loosing- not a word

There... I don't ever want to see that mistake again. Got it?:D:D

Now, I've got to go post this on seven other forums.....

    Close, but.....

Loosing - to make loose; to set free; to make less tight

the whole rims thing is really annoying....unless its someone who is going to actually going to make the center piece or wire up the spokes... A set of wheels is the proper term....its sad to say but since the times change, so does the lingo. the truth is that the majority of people (consumers) nowdays will understand rims as wheels...it sells that way too, also goes for the dreaded term "rat rod" people for some reason or another have this virus programed in their computer filled brain. next to the jay z playlist and tatoo yourself cause its cool on tv catagory, ....man let me get off this soap box.

Stromberg 94, on at least half of the Ebay descriptions.

The words "rare" (other than describing my steak) or scarce.

I hate it when someone describes how many RPMs something will turn. I always ask "How many minutes?"

RPM is plural already, unless you REALLY you have measured how many revolutions per minutes, in which case you need to divide the revolutions by the minutes to have a standardized measurement.

Heh heh - that reminds me of the guy who asks how fast the car will go.

"Well, it'll go an infinite number of different speeds......"

    mmerlinn likes this.
  22. full race motor and 3/4 cam WTF is that ?

  23. Apparently to distinguish from those components that are "hatched" or something...? Grown? Mined?

At the school, we hear no end of misinformed descriptions. "NOSS" and "blueprinted" are 2 of my faves. Don't get me started on "pipe" versus tubing...

...and WHEN did cars become "Whips"? The only thing close I can think of is a Whippet, and I haven't seen one of those in years.

  24. Had you taken the time to read through this thread BEFORE posting, you would have seen the answer.
    I'm just sayin'

  25. WHOA! Don't start on the south... Larry McReynolds calling a 9" Ford third member a "chunk"??? I thought that's what you found in the bottom of the housing after it broke...

  26. How about the Mopar "big block 318" to desribe the Poly motor (OOPS, engine:D). The blocks are the same size! The heads are wider...

  27. Ummm, chamber a round of 9mm ammo in your .45 and pull the trigger. You'll end that debate right quick.

i was looking forward to making a few post here but i best be just a looker:)

  29. That's a good one... You're right, but what are we measuring? The crankshaft, right? Is it revolving or rotating? If it's revolving, what is it revolving around? WE'VE BEEN MISLEAD all these years??!!

(No, I could never figure out the "multi-quote"...)
